    TRT & Blood Pressure Meds

Doc wants me to start taking meds for high blood pressure. Funny thing is, I think TRT is causing my blood pressure to be higher.

I hear some of them can have negative side effects.

Anyone have recommendations or types to avoid?

    Thanks

Polycythemia can also elevate blood pressure.
Look into Arginine for blood pressure....

When my hematocrit gets high, so does my blood pressure. You should have it checked.

Yeah, its a double edged sword...

I went to give blood yesterday and my blood pressure was 140/103 so they wouldn't let me donate.

You'd simply feel better with weekly injections and more steady levels instead of the hormonal roller coaster you're on. Your doc simply doesn't know hormones and if that's been your only protocol then it's just what you're used to. It doesn't make it right. Test has a half life of 5-7 days and a terminal life of about two weeks. Your doc is dosing you based on the terminal life and that says one thing, that he does not know hormones. Yes, protocols can and should be different but medical science has not changed when it comes to the metabolism of testosterone .

I'm happy that you're feeling great but any of the top doc's in the country from Crisler to Morgantaler to Shippen would back me up on this. I'd suggest you speak to your doc about weekly injections of 100mgs which will give you much more consistent and stable levels.

Some great books on TRT are Nelson Vergel's "Testosterone A Man's Guide" and Morgantalers "Testosterone for Life." They'd both help bring you up to speed on what's right and wrong.

TRT can increase your BP, it's just the price of admission for some people. Donate blood on a regular basis if your hematocrit is high. Cialis can help, but not much especially if you're high already. Try ACE inhibitors first, but stay away from beta blockers like Propranolol which can contribute to ED and can slow your heart-rate significantly. Not the first go-to BP drugs for active people. I'm on two BP Meds, Candesarten & Amlodipine. Dont be afraid of BP meds if needed, the side-effects are zero to negligible for most people. Good luck...

Thanks, that was the kind of answer I was looking for. So ACE inhibitors don't contribute to ED?

No, that is my understanding. Also, regular use of NSAIDs like Advil can raise your BP too...

I have to take a beta blocker due to heart issues....use generic Coreg (carvedilol), but I will second the generic Atacand (candesartan). The generic Atacand is very mild, yet works very well for me. Also, after the pharmacist mentioned it to me, I had my Dr. write the script for 8mg generic Atacand tablets and I split them in half since I only need 4mg/ day.
Saved me $74/ month by splitting the 8mg vs. a month's worth of 4mg tabs. Needless to say, the pharmacist lady got a gift card from me.
There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

You're lucky, I have to take the max dosage of Candesarten @ 24 mgs/day. However, it's not only for BP issues with me. I take the Candesarten as it's a good preventive med for bad migraines that I get on a regular basis...

Ahhh....they gave me amitryptiline for that. If I didn't have the multiple heart problems, I could drop the carvedilol and just go with the candesartan. It works really well for me...minimal bad sides, if any?
I often wonder if the Factor V Leiden disorder I have in addition to the heart issues is the cause of the migraines? It kind of puts my blood in a mild state of hypercoaguability, which would impede the circulation and that is thought to be one of several triggers for migraines and cluster headaches, I believe.

Funny, amitryptiline didnt work for me. I know that people with migraines are very sensitive to anything BP and/or blood related in the skull so your theory may be right. If you have a neurologist run it by him/her to see what they think?

No, never heard of that one. Please let us know how it works for you & the dosage you're on. Something to keep in my tool chest if needed...
