    Blood platelets donation

    Hello all

Does anyone know how donating blood platelets effect hemocrit levels?

I know whole blood donations bring it down, not able to donate again for about 30 days

Wanted to donate for Vegas but I'm only eligible for platelets and looking for info

    Thanks as always!

It shouldn't affect Hb/Hct since your RBCs are returned to you. The blood is spun down, the platelets removed and the plasma and RBCs returned to you. Maybe some very slight hemolysis of red cells but nothing measurable if any.

I've often wondered the same. They always ask if I'd like to try platelet donation rather than whole blood. I always decline because I don't think it lowers hemoglobin, which is why I donate in the first place.

Anyone here with real life experience with this? I'd like a definitive answer too.

I have asked my hematologist and the RN over the blood bank at the hospital and they both gave me basically the same answer as Trail posted above. The blood bank RN said some of the older equipment they used to utilize to spin out the platelets did slightly lower hematocrit levels due to damaged RBCs, but that as far as she knew that was a thing of the past.
