I would still stick with dextrose. You can still go a little hypo even on low doses. I have my shake immediately upon waking with my shot, then get ready and after 45min to an hour before I leave have my full breakfast with oatmeal etc.

i could just have an apple and a banana - would that suffice

also - do u really eat oatmeal 45mins post injection
    oatmeal contains FAT

You could also prepare a second shake in the morning blending some berries, protein, skim milk and oats and just take it with you in shaker. I do that when I'm in a rush in the morning.

There's minimal amounts of fat in oatmeal. A couple grams isn't going to make you ballon up, you're just wanting to avoid having large amounts of fat.

Just carry a can of coca cola on you at all times incase of hypo. Make sure it's not diet coke though.

Solid foods will get the job done, but you don't need solid foods incase of en emergency. A drink that contains sugar is your best bet as it will act fast and that's what you need at the time. Coca cola contains pure sugar, and sugar is the best weapon against hypoglycemia. So just bring a few cans with you just incase.

Chicken and rice is good, but because its in the morning I doubt you want to eat chicken and rice then, it's a bit early for those foods. Have breakfast bro, oats and a protein shake will do. Leave the chicken and rice when it comes to dinner time. Rice in the AM, ewww.
