Yes malto is fine, and so is the malto/dex mix.

Regular sugar would work but you are better of using dex or malto, it's cheaper anyway.

Per the manufacturer (IDS) Waximaize = amylopectin. And per a chemistry dictionary found online: "amylopectin = A polysaccharide comprising highly branched chains of glucose molecules. It is one of the constituents (the other being amylose) of starch."

I used to drink CarboMax from Max Muscle, which is a pure maltodextrin complex carb, but I switched over to the Waximaize about 6 months ago and really like it. The only thing that sucks about it is that it's REALLY light and fluffy, kinda like body (baby) powder and it goes EVERYWHERE when you try to measure out your scoops and put it in your shaker cup; my counter always has white powder on it

Oh yeah, and the Waximaize is really concentrated stuff. I use a digital scale to double check my stuff, so I don't remember if I use a 1/4 measuring cup or a 1/3, but 2 scoops of this stuff is 80gms of carbs!!! My PWO shake consisting of 3 scoops of Isopure ZeroCarb protein and 2 scoops of Waximaize tastes great and goes right down

And one last heads-up: maybe it's psychological from reading the manufacturer's label on the container, but it really does feel like it takes all your water and pulls it in to the muscle, leaving you REALLY thirsty... make sure you IMMEDIATELY get started on your gallon of water after you drink that stuff
