Need some help on back injury.
Hey all,
Looking for advice from members on how they deal with their back issues similar to mine. Uploading my MRI results from last night because the pain got so bad my legs gave out and I was sent in an ambulance from work to the hospital. I am beginning to think squats and dead lifts are out of my life now. I am an active person and been dealing with this since 2014. If anyone can tell me how they work around this issue I would greatly appreciate it. I will be honest and up front, I do not stretch or do yoga. But willing to learn techniques if this has been beneficial to others.

I need something similar.
I dont deadlift. Its just too risky.
I threw my back out the other day on cable rows because I lost my focus.
My lowest disc is always there to remind me anytime something is off in the slightest.
I dont have any answers for you but my chiro advised yoga for my back and my other joints.
He used to train bb's for comp and is a sharp guy.
I believe him but cant get around when they have the yoga classes at my gym.
I am tired of babying my back. It really pisses me off.
If I could go back in time I would have gotten workers comp and probably had the company I worked for fix my back when I hurt it carrying pipe.
I hear guys say the got fused vertebrae and squat and deadlift ok.
All I know is I cant deadlift and squatting gets pretty dangerous.
When my disc slips it pinches my nerve that controls my legs and causes my back muscles to seize contracted. It hurts like holy hell.
An idiot chiro can't get me back in. It takes a good one.
I couldnt walk the first time it happened and the first chiro said take some ibuprophen and get an icepack.... My disc was against my spinal chord.... Hope that moron gets sued outta business.Last edited by Obs; 12-02-2018 at 01:03 AM.

Not an MD, but a PT. I can decipher and apply my background as best as I can.
OK, you’ve got some issues that can turn further south badly.
At L4-5, the thecal sac is being pressed (easily put, the outside layer of spinal cord is being pressed) which can shut down leg strength & cause incontinency issues.
At L5-S1, the annulus (outer layer of the disc) is torn. But it doesn’t sound like there is much of the disc left to leave the outer layer, so that is good. However, the space where the spinal nerve exits (neural foreman) has moderate narrowing and this is not good. It too can cause pain, numbness & lack of muscular control, but generally on just that side.
The fact that both legs are involved like last night many times means spinal cord, not a good thing at all.
Personally, I think “working around the issue’ is an idea that you have already passed long ago. See a very good orthopedic back specialist/surgeon for their recommendation.
Avoid squats, DL like the plague.
When you pick up or move even the lightest weight, do not bend from your lower back, use your legs.
Standing and seated movements where you are pressing overhead should be avoided.
Good luck & let me know if I can be of anymore assistance.

My situation wasn't as bad as yours, after the MRI the Ortho told me surgery was an option but that arthritis is common and blah, blah, blah. It never stopped bothering me but got more tolerable. Two years later it got bad again and I went to a chiro. He used something called decompression. Essentially is straps your upper and lower body and stretches you. They use a TENs machine and heat/cold. That and a sleep number bed and my back is doing just fine. I think it loosens the muscles around the vertabra which allows the disk to go back in place and not be pinched. This may not be an option for you but it did work for me. GL!

Follow up with the doctor and I am starting on 300mg Gabepentin 3 times a day. I will mostly just use it at night because it does make me drowsy after taking it. I see physical Therapy tomorrow afternoon to start doing traction and they gave me a TENs machine to use. Right now I have just been doing the heat, but I will start in with the cold tomorrow.
Really everyone, I appreciate all the options you guys are giving me.

Sorry to hear man.
I herniated a discs L4/L5 at 17 years old and since then haven't done any deadlifts of squats, just did less taxing alternatives. I now have a broken disc in my neck which is being surgically removed and replaced in January and i'm 25 Backs suck! lol
I would go see a chiropractor if i where you, get regular checkups and focus on more isolation work and some isometric core strengthening exercises to make up for not doing squats/deads.
To be honest, the best advice would be to take your doctors advice but definitely get a few opinions from various professionals until you conclude a plan, good luck!
