J,
Good job and congrats for the overall vic... I have a few questions if you have time to answser. How long have you been training ? How old are you ?'
The reason i ask is that I am the same height and been training four years now. I have competed for two. My off season weight this year is 200 and around 12 % bodyfat. I know it takes time to build muscle, but I am hoping to eventually become a light heavy weight. I have competed as a middleweight the past two years and admire that fact that you carry as much muscle on your 5'7" frame... My first year, i weighed in at 163 and around 3 %, year two I weighed in around 168. Is five pounds a muscle each year normal ? I eat right and take two 16 week cycles per year. One for bulk, the other for precontest....
Thanks in advance for the info

Avion,
I'm 24 years old and have been training seriously since about age 15. In my opinion at four years you are just beginning to tap into the potential your body has. I actually weighed less this year (182lbs) compared to my first show (185 lbs) in 2006. So in my opinion 5 lbs a year is great progress, especially if you can continue to improve your conditioning each year. My advice when dieting is to stay away from the scale and use the mirror as much as possible. I was the lightest lightheavy in the class and still ended up fairing pretty well. Keep at it man...............before you know it you'll probably be competing as a heavyweight.

Thanks
J,
I appreciate you responding to my questions. It is reassuring to know that i have Growth Potential. This years dieting seemed easier than the first. I think my conditioning was solid, but i could have been grainier. The drying out process has been very confusing to me. My first year, i hired a trainer(experianced competitior) to help me prepare, and my conditioning was very good. The second year (this past summer) I was in Iraq during my prep and all went well. I pulled off a First Place finish as a Novice MW. I have recruited a National Level Competitor to help me with my diet and training for next summer. Maybe one day, I will master this process and be consistent each show. There are so many theories, techniques and opinions on drying out.
You have been training a while, I just turned 36 and hope to eventually be a light heavy weight like yourself. Thanks again for responding and I wish you success in your bodybuilding career.

A,
Thanks for the kind words man. You're right, there are so many theories on the "fool proof" way to get bone dry. From my experiences I have learned a number of things that are key to to getting into very good condition. Most importantly you have to be extremely lean. Too many guys will use the excuse that they mistimed their carb-up or spilled over when in fact they just aren't lean enough. I suggest using a mild diuretic like aldactone starting at about 5 days out. I would start to deplete on Sunday all they way through Tuesday (utilizing quick full body workouts both days). Then would begin my carb up on Wednesday gradually increasing your daily intake up until your show day. Again this is just a technique that has worked for me in the past. Good luck in the future, from the pic in your avi it appears you have a well balanced physique with a bunch of potential.
