Stabbing at York U residence
Sep. 5, 2006. 09:11 PM
BOB MITCHELL
STAFF REPORTER
A 19-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after allegedly attacking her former boyfriend and then turning the knife on herself.
Toronto police said last night they were still trying to determine what caused the violent domestic assault yesterday afternoon inside a York University student residence.
“There had been a recent break-up,” Acting Staff Sergeant Thomas Urbaniak said.
The two students were to start classes Wednesday, York U officials said.
Police said the woman’s 21-year-old ex-boyfriend suffered knife wounds to his back and shoulders. He was treated at a local hospital and was being interviewed last night at 31 Division.
Both are believed to be international students but university officials did not know the year or courses in which the two were enrolled.
Urbaniak said the injured man managed to flee the room after being stabbed and alerted York U security staff who contacted police.
School officials said no other student was ever in danger.
The female was rushed with life-threatening injuries to nearby York-Finch Hospital, with vital signs absent, and later transferred to Toronto’s Sunnybrook hospital where she underwent surgery.
Emergency crews responded to reports of a stabbing at the Vanier College residence about 2:30 p.m., Sgt. Urbaniak said.
Medical personnel revived the woman before rushing her to hospital, he said.
Last night, police were treating the incident as an attempted suicide and attempt murder with no charges yet laid.
“These are the only two people involved,” Urbaniak said. “There are no other outstanding suspects.”
