My generation is utter shit
Young Adults "Largely Disinterested" in the Vision for Space Exploration
http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Yo...ation_999.html
+ Opposition to a human mission to Mars is strong, running 3:1; however the majority (52%) support more robotic missions like the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity.+ Interest in return to the Moon is slim, with 29% interested, 45% neutral and 23% disinterested

I'm not interested one bit in Big Brother Johan and I love the thought of Space Exploration.
It's TV though. Vast majority of people are brainwashed by adverts/commercials and shitty reality TV shows.

It just takes the right marketing to get people hyped about it.

More people in the states voted for American Idol than the presidential race...
Too bad stupidity isn't painful...

I don't see what the big deal is. I just graduated with a Bachelor's in Aerospace Engineering, and if even I'm not giving a damn about the new Moon expedition, why would anyone else. The Moon has been explored already. This is just a sideshow distraction to get everyone's attention from all the other problems that America is facing, and going to face. All the other space projects that are being dreamed up are, for the most part, just impractical and wasteful. Wanting to set up a colony on Mars, etc. Hello, there is no air up there, and the cost of supplying enough resources for even one person to live sustainably up there would be mind blowing. Meh.

Maybe if we had celebrity astronauts people would be more interested. The cast of friends maybe?

There doesnt have to be a point to a mars expedition or some monetary gain. Its exploration, its the human spirit. But it will undoubtly spinn of into profit.
Mining asteroids would obviously be a polution free alternative to our mines if we just got the technoloy rolling, it would pay for its own costs in no time aslong as someone is willing to get it started.
Not to mention having the entire human race gathered on one planet isnt exactly a idea situation for the long time survival of humanity.
Exploration has always been a part of the human nature, I se no reason to let go of that just because we are done with this boring planet.

i think it would take a real long time before anything in space makes a profit. But my probably is that is gov. funded. We have enough problems on earth and we are in big enough debt as it is. Spend the money here where it is needed now. I'm not into space stuff at all. So I'm asking the question in all seriousness. What have we actually gained by going to the moon or mars so far? It may have answered some questions but has it done anything to help us improve our lives or help us in any way?

Wars and space travel is where 90% of our technology comes from.

Those investments are made because there is no telling what might spin of. Someone needs to be willing to put the money into those kinds of things, but it has to be the goverments because no company would invest in it since the profit might come like 40 years after the investment. When it comes to science its impossible to predict breakthroughs and what will become technology...
But the space race has produced alot of technology that have spinned off into everyday life. Im not a engineer or all that interested in technical stuff so I cant give any example except teflon frying pans but it is like roidattack say. The space race has been very benifical.
But then again I dont need any profit for it to be worth it. I dont think columbus, cook, scott, magellan ect had any thoughts of profit when they explored the world. Its the human spirit, it has no price tag and it shouldnt either
The cash that goes into space exploration is minisculed compared to other expenses anyway.

I dont think there has to be a profit. I tought someone mentioned it before me thatswhy i made the comment. I dont think space expoloration should be eliminated but i think actuall need for the money here on earth should take a priority. We shouldnt go with out something we made need to send a robot to take a sample of dirt from mars for 5 billion.

but the nasa budget for instance is just a drop in the bucket in the american economy and the esa budget is a even smaller drop in the european economy.
If you compare nasa budget with for instance defence spendings its like comparing a fly with a elephant. Other spendings are far larger.
so imo the space exploration funds could easily be doubled. The gains outweight the costs.
The need for money to solve todays problems should never completely eliminate the money going into projects that ensure our future. There is alot of economic potential in space, especialy when it comes to polution free energy and resources, it just has to become more affordable and more routine to get up there and thats why the investments are needed. What we put into space exploration today will be returned ten fold, if not to us, then atleast to our kids.
