Ohio Sheriff Orders Jail Cells Painted Pink
Ohio Sheriff Orders Jail Cells Painted Pink
AP
TROY, Ohio — Inmates at the Miami County Jail in Troy are under orders to paint the cellblocks pink to test the sheriff's theory that the color will have a pacifying affect on prisoners.
Sheriff Charles Cox says he's entering the academic debate over the color pink's calming abilities.
Jail administrator Dee Sandy says the first time the sheriff mentioned the concept to her, she thought he was joking. Not so. She ended up picking a shade of purple for the jail bars.
Previously, the jail's walls were cream-colored and the bars were painted blue.
The jail, about 20 miles north of Dayton, houses up to 111 inmates.

Unless the Sheriff has a PhD in Psychology, I dont see where his "theory" would have any merit being tested on human subjects. Especially in a county jail where most of the inmates are awaiting trial or serving out very short sentences for non-violent offenses, traffic violations, not paying child support, etc... Of course, all these criminals have no rights and we should treat them like less than humans and make their lives a living hell right?

I think this is funny. He's just copying that Texas Sheriff that dresses his prisoners in pink. No harm done in this. Jail is supposed to not be pleasant, you're supposed to learn a lesson and it doesn't matter how small of infraction it is, you don't go to jail to be on a vacation

I don't agree with every law in the books and I was referring to people that are already convicted of crimes. And I hardly think being put in a cell painted pink with purple bars is cruel or unfair punishment. C'mon now, they aren't being made to sleep dirt holes in the ground eating MRE's and not being able to shower for weeks at a time....oh, that's our service members over in Iraq and Afghanistan. Anything better than that doesn't get my sympathy.

In what way is pink jail cells "unpleasant conditions"???
Heck if this sheriff's theory is right in any way, he's actually making conditions better! Affter all anything that reduces the stress and violence in the cells would be an improvement in conditions for the persons in the cells.

I think it's going to far, the only reason to paint it pink is to humiliate them and thats not necessary, IMO. Jail should not be a pleasent place and it's NOT but painting it pink is wrong.

IDK. But if I'm in prison i think the last thing on my mind is the color of the walls. Think about it though at least they are getting fresh paint

There's a jail in Georgia somewhere (I believe it's Georgia) that has pink walls.
I saw a special on TLC or History channel about it.

My sophmore year college dorm had all the doors painted pink and the color scheme was very feminie because it was a chick dorm the year before. It was no big deal, you learn to live with it.

Think Pink!!
Was out Christmas shopping for my niece with Mom. If a dress came in white, yellow, green, blue, or pink my mom would invariable say: "Oh, how nice! It comes in pink!" , as if there were no other colors for a little girl. The same thing happened when we looked at bicycles. Ditto with the little electric Jeep (All adult women prefer to drive big pink Jeeps with 70's Barbie flowers all over them, ya know.) I was more than a little surprised.
Now, if good ol' Ma has been thoroughly poisoned by Society's Prejudices, I don't expect much more from all the boys down at the gym... but WHY would anyone's sense of personal masculity be threatened by a color?
p.s. I made a vow to my neice, when she was an infant, that I would NEVER buy her anything pink unless she SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR IT.

I still fail to see how a prison painted pink is "cruel and unusual punishment" in any way?
