I fly with my kids and wife. If I saw that bombing attempt, I would have killed that man with my bare hands. I would have gotten away with it too... because I would be using any force necessary to save the lives.

Now that guy will probally be released in a few years.

You can't kill these muppets to set an example because:

a) That would make him a martyr to the cause
b) He's intending to take his life as well as others so there's no example of him to be made

Yep, no doubt this is going to make things way more inconveniant, however if having to spend an extra hour in the que to ensure my safety on a airplane then it's an hour of my life well spent.

I can see it in the future though that you will not be able to carry any hand luggage with you at all. Anything that could be used as a weapon or to trigger a weapon will come under massive scrutiny now.
