passing on the desire
i'm posting this here in the off chance a number of you are fathers.
i got into this on my own (my dad was not an athlete). i was an athlete in HS and college and then got seriously into training in the mid-eighties. ratchet forward 30 years and i'm still at it, almost as strong and developed as always - but those who follow me know i have various joint issues!)
my son is 15 and a hs wrestler. i haven't pushed him into training because i believe that a your person should pursue their own passions and figure out what works for them. i certainly have exposed him to it and when asked was very supportive by providing information on training, nutrition and whatnot. i'd say he's been dabbling with training to help with wrestling for about the last year.
this morning for the first time ever, we worked out together! it was a great father son experience. today was back/biceps day and my training is HIT using double drop sets for all exercises. to his credit, my son kept up with me and really went to failure like a champ. the weights were different of course and this was his first experience with IT style training. i can't wait to see how he feels tomorrow (and if he'll train with me again! I SURE hope so!!!)!

That's really great to hear. I am a father of three with one son. I played Hockey through college and he has played Baseball now embarking on college. I always hoped he would find his way to the gym. He has gone with me on occasion, by his own choice. Although he never followed through. He doesn't possess the drive to want a gym body. I always hope that he finds his way to a healthy lifestyle, but as his father, I am supportive of whatever he decides to do. I never want to push him or make him feel bad about his decisions. My father did enough of that for all of the next generations. Nice to hear your story and thanks for sharing.

son did 8 reps with 60 lb dumbbells overhead press today - he started lifting on his own for wrestling in november, and started with 8 reps with 30 lb dumbells... remember the days when you could 2x your strength in 6 months?!?
we were walking across the gym in front of a mirror mid-way through chest last sunday, and he looked at himself and said, "i can see my boobs through my t-shirt" (ok, he has to work on word choice, but i think he's getting the bug!).

My old man didn't have the time, so when I see father/son @ gyms every so often - there is hint of envy. The wife and I didn't want kids, but if I had a son, working out together would be very cool!

I am sort of waiting to see if my grandsons will want to work out. That would be great.

these posts brought me smile, big time!
Im a father of two, and while boys are still young, some day if they chose to take on lifting/healthy lifestyle (which I believe they will as I have to raise them to the best of my knowledge and ethics) It is my dream not to only lift with them but enjoy the moment and be a father they deserve to have.

oh... and my son is starting to give me a run for my money on pbs... he did 315 for 4 with deadlift yesterday (he weighs 150).
the best part is that he texted me from school to tell me. happy dad!
go son, go!
