    Question Powerlifiting Competition?

Okay well the other day in the gym I was lifiting as I normally would and I had no spotter and benched 315 for a set of 10, well a guy I know real well talked to me about competing in a bench division or meet or what ever and he pretty much said I had to go so I was wondering what to expect, how will this go down, is this seperated by weight class or age or what?

You can enter a age division, or just lift open. Weight classes apply. Men and women are separate divisions and also have different weight classes. Are you wanting to bench only in a meet, push/pull, or full power? Do you have any equipment experience? What is your bodyweight?

Damn man. You should enter a meet asap. You can compete in 16-19 y/o division and get into the 220 class and probably get a state record, or very close to it. If you wait until you are 20 (junior division), or lift in the 242 (what a 222 bodyweight would put you in) you are at a competitive disadvantage.

Naw man, Im not bullshitting you. State records vary widely from state to state though (like you could push up the bar and get a record in Montana since nothing has been set). What state you from and I can look it up in WABDL?

Most important thing to remember about your first meet is just get your first lift in. You'll have 3 attempts. Your first attempt should be something you can do easily (3RM weight would be a good place to start). You also have to be aware as Doc.Sust may have already mentioned that a competition bench is nothing like what you have probably been doing in the gym. If there's a friendly powerlifter in your gym ask him about a competition bench press. The most important aspect is the pause on your chest (the bar must come to a complete stop), feet flat (this varies to feet motionless is some meets), your butt has to stay on the bench among many other things. You want your opening lift to be a weight you can do for 3 reps while maintaining this form. I recommend not using a bench shirt if the meet is soon. It may just throw you off if you are not used to training with it and different organizations have rules as to the types of shirts you can wear.
