Anyone else with blow discs in their back?
I have hernaited discs at L5 and L4... I'm young unfortunately and even lifting 100lbs over head ruins my week.
It's been hard adapting my work outs... no squats, no military, no dead lifts.
Just wondering if anyone else out there with a similar injury can share any exercises they've found as good substitues for these big ones...
I ment "Blown" not "Blow" typo!Last edited by DrSauce99; 02-08-2009 at 09:17 PM.

I think so. Going to the doctor for another appointment here in about a week. First time I went in, they gave me stretches to do, which help for about 30 seconds. I've completely cut deads out, but I've been doing light squats lately. I figure if it hurts all the time anyways, may as well get a decent leg workout in.
What are your treatment options? I have a friend with the same thing who gets cortisol shots every couple of months.

I dont' remember the "L" numbers, but i have had two microscopic surgeries on my neck and lower back for bulging discs
I can no longer squat, but can still do heavy leg presses. I can still deadlift, but not as heavy and not as often, so one arm rows take the place.
Just have to find what your body will let you do.

My options are maybe stem cells or something down the road or replacement discs.
Mine are hernaited and about 1/2 the height theyre suppoesd to be... basically at 28 I have the discs of a 75 year old..
Mine never hurt while lifting, its the days after that are literally miserable gets so bad I cant even eat..
So I avoid anything heavy, granted leg press is fine as it doesnt put stress on the back.

Doc.sust is a chiropractor, i'm sure he'd be able to stir you in the right direction, I never had a blown disc or anything but he had my back feeling like a million bucks.

i have the same thing..l4 , l5 both herniated as well as l5 is fragmented along with c5 fragmented as well (yes pieces of spine broken and still in my back and neck). Lat pull downs , seated rows, seated dumbell overhead press along with lateral raises , and leg presses on a machine and machine hack squats. After some time of strengthening lower back muscles you can prob progress to doing the other lifts - just possibly at lower weights than usual or even at full capacity - Just my experience....

My pain stays mainly in my back. My last doc said the pain shooting down the legs usually means a muscle strain, but obviously not in your case. Here's a website I found with treatment options, as well as surgery. I found it helpful for when I go see my doc.

Man i feel ya on the back issue. I have 2 discs out. L4-L5 and L5-S1. For me squats seem to really aggrivate my back pain, and I only would do light weights. So I am trying other methods.. ie.. leg extensions , hack squats, a little trial and error I think is all we can do to figure out what works for us.. But as far as controlling the pain really aggressive stretching has worked wonders for me.. have somebody help you and stretch hard every hour or 2 when your back is bothering you. just a thought

Its realy hard, my legs are shrinking with out squats or deadlifts all i can do is the Hip-Sled. It just doesnt seem to give my legs the workout they need though.
Now my shoulders are suffering because I can't do military anymore either... ugh...
