Have you consulted a doctor? Or a specialist? How long did THEY tell you to wait before lifting?

How is it you have a bulging L5 disc and do not know anything about it? Get information about it from your doctor, not from anonymous internet posters.

i had the same injury.. took me 4 weeks before i could do any compound movements at all.. and then very light with very strict form. I was also in heavy physical therapy for those 4 weeks, and the following 8 weeks.

Ah, I see now. Still, any injury to your back and vertebrae have the potential of haunting you for the rest of your life. That is one area in which I (personally) would abide by the doctor's (or more preferably, specialist's) advice to the letter.

I sincerely recommend the utmost caution and utter compliance to the professional's opinion.

Either way, I wish you a safe and speedy recovery!

I had a similar problem a few months ago. I hurt my neck while doing bi's. I could not move my neck for a couple of weeks. It felt like I slept on it wrong. I went to the doc and he told me that I had a bulging disc between my 2nd & 3rd, and 4th & 5th vertebre. He said it was not caused by working out but probably happened from something else. He said there is nothing that can be done and said go back to the gym when I feel fine and go light building back up to heavy weights. Well I went back to the gym the next day but went light. It took me about 2 weeks to get back to normal. He said if it ever bothers me real bad I will have to have surgery. Well thats my story hope it helps.
