I scan by using a large format (10200*14040 = 52 Mb files)
Then I reduce them and correct defaults with Paint Shop Pro...
But it takes time and I've not scanned as many as pictures as you said to have (> 5000 if I remember) (only ~ 1000, but I don't keep bad quality photos, only those from great photographers such Ralph DeHaan, Mike Neveux or Chris Lund)

Thanks ....but you do not need to scan the pics with this high resolution(10200*14040 = 52 Mb files),i think that (800*640) would be enough...no need for reducing.....thanks any way..(you have very good scaner unlike mine)

The resolution ensues from the chosen DPI (1200 is enough for me)...
