    A 'bearable' tuna recipe

    Tuna is a great source of protein. It's high protein/low fat and ideally I'd have it in my diet every day. However, it's bland and gets gross after a while IMO. I am forever trying to come up with ways to eat it that don't compromise the great macro values, i.e. I LOVE tuna salad but all the mayo makes it an unrealistic meal for me. So, here's my latest:

    - 1 'large' can of tuna (preferably solid white albacore) - I can't remember the exact size, but I get them at Costco (their own brand) and they're larger than the regular cans you buy in the supermarket. A whole can provides roughly 40g protein and 3g fat.

    - 1 medium baked potato

    - 1/4 cup low fat shredded cheddar or Mexican cheese blend

    - 1/4 cup nonfat sour cream

    Bake the potato (microwave for 5-6 mins). Mash the baked potato (I leave the skin on) in a bowl. Break up the tuna out of the can and 'sprinkle' it all over the potato. Add the shredded cheese over the top and microwave until melted. Put a few 'dollops' of the sour cream and mix together.

    The potato and sour cream work to create that 'wetness' that the mayo normally would, but without the added fat. Obviously, we're adding quite a bit of carbs here so this is only viable as a protein/carb meal. I've been eating it as my PPWO meal lately.

    What I need to do next is flavor the sour cream with some herbs and/or spices to add more flavor to the dish. Any input welcome.

    This actually sounds good. I would add green onions or sauteed onions, S&P (salt pepper) garlic (I add garlic to about everything) You can use probably find a good "Ms. Dash" style that has all the seasonings in it already, thier just a bit expensive.

    Hmm... sauteed onion, huh? I wouldn't mind giving that a shot... it'll add a nice sweet flavor. I do already add S&P (forgot to mention that) but not garlic... hard to imagine canned tuna + garlic but hey, you never know. Yes, probably a decent Ms. Dash that'll serve the purpose.

    i normally just have my tuna with pickled beetroot. tuna in a dish with some sliced beetroot and a dribble of the vinegar. id highly recomemd trying if havent before!

    i did treat myself the otha day and bought some sweet pickled onions, even better with tuna than beetroot, but high in sugar! a nice treat tho.

    Cool, let me know if you can think of any improvements because this recipe is kind of bland and screaming for some!!!

    pickled beetroot, eh? Never heard of it, but will have to give it a try. Anything... anything to get rid of the tuna taste and wetten it up lol.

    only way i can eat beetroot! normal beetroot tastes like stale feet to me!! (not that fresh feet taste much better lol) for all the NO2/goodness in beetroot, worth putting into any diet.

    is pickled beetroot not popular in the US?

    Egg mayo mixed with a whole can of tuna is fantastic. It's great in a sandwich or on whole meal toast!

    I'll give this a try though, I love baked potatoe!

    When you get tired of eating tuna switch to salmon in a can. I can "bear" that better and eat it for weeks.



    1 cup of barillo wheat pasta.
    1 cup of Tomato sauce.
    1 can salmon and 2 TSP Parm. cheese
    Side dish 2 cups of green veggies.



    Cook pasta (10 min boil) drain and toss in salmon, tomato sauce and cheese.

    Done!

    Never tried canned salmon tbh because I figured I'd hate it. I don't LOVE fresh salmon as it is (I like it on occasion but it's not something I could eat daily... if I could afford to lol). I will definitely give it a shot though. Would love to see it incorporated in a low carb meal.
