    150lbs dumbells?

Whats the deal with most gyms having 120lbs or 150lbs max dumbells? Lack of use or what?

I want to do colemans 200lbs dumbells and right now im at 140lbs and doing sets, so I dont think im far from maxing 10 reps at 170lbs.

So whats the deal? I figure lack of use or insurance issues?

most gyms cater to smaller guys then the guys that frequent this board. so if they spent the money on those db's then they would hardly get used. so its about saving money. they get the biggest dumbells that they think will be used 99% of the time. Plus, those suckers are just too big. most of the ppl that work at my gym can hardly pick up a 120 pounder with both hands. so, money and ease of use are the main reasons i would believe.

dude ask yourself how many folks in your gym can/could actually use 150's and up. there are probably only a hand full. Maybe Im wrong, you may be a member at a place were there are a crap load of big dudes though. At my gym there are prob. only 5 or so guys that can use the 150's. and thats out of 2500 members. those big suckers only collect dust. every now and then I fool with them but they are so much trouble to get into place/position. Congratulations on busting out the 140's that big weight. but you might end up having to spend your own cash if ya want the bigger ones.

Insurance, I think gyms pay a huge jump once they go over like 120 or something? plus yeah at like 400.00 a pair the get pricey just to have some dumb ass drop them and bend the handle after 2 shitty reps on the decline bench, (not saying that is you, but you know it would happen)

Guess you gotta put yourself in the gym owners shoes, probably figures he can spend less $$$ on equipment that will get more use. Besides, after a couple uses some knucklehead will drop them and put a a nice bend in them making them out of balance for everyone else after that.

ill tell you what....using dbells that are that heavy are more of a pain in the ass to get from point a to point b than it is to actually lift them.....i dunno i might be the only one with this thought....i just figured i would share..hahaha....but my gym goes up to 130 and ive only seen them used once and that was the other day when someone was doing shrugs with them....other than that i havent seen anyone else touch them......its deff got to be a money thing.....cause at my old gym i wanted 120s and they told me i needed to get so many people to sign a peice of paper saying they would use them too.

Yeah it kind of blows, I know I can hit the 150s, but then what? Yeah Im not going to lug those things around just for one press. Makes sense I guess, I guess 150lbs will be my max till I join another gym. Im just surprised for GOLDs, I thought they were the modern day heavy lifter and pro gym? Its my first membership at golds, I always workout on some base somewhere and they always have the old school stuff since they are too cheap to update it hehe.

I guess I should just be glad my strength is going up since my accident.

My gym has up to the 200s, but it isn't a chain gym. I use them for rows. When I use them, everyone around just stops and watches

That's funny. Your surprised for a Gold's gym not to have heavier weight. Man Gym's haven't catered to powerlifters and bodybuilders since the Arnold days when you could actually walk up and talk to the gym owner, and shake his hand. There are no gyms anymore except a few burried isolated areas. They have fitness centers now a day's that cater to the soccer mom's and enterprenuers, and all those babyboomers.

my gym goes to 150 but they go by 10s once you hit 115. so we have 100-105-110-115-125-135-145-150.

  18. #18
we just got 75kg db ill be concerntration curling them before you know it hahaha

my gym goes up to 200. theres a bunch of guys who get into the 150's to 180's. i use them for shrugs and rows mainly. one dude uses the 200 that ive seen and know he uses them regularly. this is a mom and pop gym and the owner is a 50 year old big, cut dude. use gets into the bigger dbs, so that probably helped the cause.

i saw up to 220s in diamond gym in irvington, nj. alot of amateur and pro guys trained there.

I want to see how many can do 200's with good form. Most people I see that try to use big dumbell's have no business with the weight they are trying to use. But it is entertaining to watch the idiots make a lot of noise to try to get everyone to look at them and their shitty form. LOL

150's in my gym. Although someone brought in a single 200 and leaves it at the gym, just for rows.

My gym (college gym) only goes up to 120s. When I started hitting 120s for 12, I started using a barbell for rows. As for db bench, I do incline with the 120s, stick with barbell for bench. I've been trying to have them get some heavier weights for a couple of months, no luck. Be glad if you guys got anything over 120s in your gym.

It's kind of hard to find a hardcore gym that carries weight, and trains people in the parking lot with chains attached to them, but they are around. Just look around and you'll find them. My gym carries 180 lbs. I haven't lifted them, but they're on the list.

Well as in you in the gym, it doesnt have to be ANY sort of weight so grunt and grown. Those people REALLY REALLY piss me off sometimes, but I have let out some grunts but we are talk heavy shit. They are over on bench doing like 135lbs or some crap and HUAH HUAH HUAH, man shut the **** up.

I pride myself on my workouts, dont grunt (try), watch my form ALWAYS regardless of how many times I have done the workout, and ask my buddy to do the same.

All grunting does is let out energy. Grunt away, at your gym...

Plus heavy meaning? Everyones HEAVY weight is heavy, not the point man. Its the excess of trying to say look at me, if your one of those people chances are then your not as big or tough as you think.

Not directly towards you man, but just for the grunters, not too get too far off the thread subject.

Yeah I never mind that and always remember. It just pushes it with grunting over the top and flexing in the mirror. Thats as bad as people going into the free weight area and doing jumping jacks or sit-ups when there is a place for that like 20 feet away, yeah I put it all in the same book.

grunting gives me an edge too - not intentionally to make a lot of noise but the aggression builds up on heavy squats / deads

for me and its satisfying and helps me squeeze out more reps then pretending im in a library - not unusual for me to talk outloud to myself in the middle of a set of heavy squats either to keep the adrenaline up

my gym goes up to 220. Its nice, but no one really uses them (that i have seen.) Ill pull 160-180s off for DB shrugs. other than that i dont go to 150's for bench or anything

I sometimes grunt or do a loud exhale. But I do it even when it's just me in the gym, it's not an attention thing, it helps me. But I agree, there is a point where it's crossing the line.

lol, I have also been doing a lot of both of those lately. I vary from a quite air blowing "te" noise to a all out srceaming "arghhhh". Also pump my self up beore my set with self taunting (what are you...sum kind of pu$$y, lift) and trying to convince myself that its an easy lift. The midset "come on" and "one more" serve me well also.

I go to three different gyms, two are very commercial and one is a muscle gym. I fell so out of place doing that at the commercial gym, I get people I know coming from way over the furthest corner from me, inquiring what is going on, or even from the change room when I'm doing dead lifts. Its a good thing I'm usually lifting a lot more than the people around me or I'd look like a total dick. I have tried being quite but it really affects, my lifts.

Also, the two commercial gyms I train at have 45kg dumbbells at one, and 50kg at the other. The muscle gyms dumbbells go up to 70kg.

hah very similar - - - - start pacing back and forth with my head nodding up and down to the mp3 player mumbling something like "lets go....cmon lets go....show em what you got...."

then trying to close my eyes to goto a different place...getting into the zone it a lot of work
