it really is goal oriented.. IMO nothing should be taken prior to cardio if your doing it immediately post workout, because you want to avoid insulin spike and thsi is the time to burn fat. NOW, if your goal is to bulk i would refeed while doing cardio with 5g free form aminos, and just save the shake with carbs for IMMEDIATELY after. if cutting you may want to refeeed with bcaa's, but wait even longer than after the cardio to suck it down. muscle science showed studies and data that supports a 2 hour window after exercise when it has a negative effect on protein breakdown. so really it is goal oriented, because you burn x amount of fat kcals AFTER cardio, so why not take advantage of this during a cut?

You only have 3 to choose from, leucine, isoluecine and valine. Count me in the "after cardio" camp for when to take in post workout nutrition. I think too many people believe their "anabolic window" slams shut right after weight training. The main reason I prefer after cardio is I dont want to be doing 45 minutes on a treadmill or stairmill with 500 calories trying to digest in my gut.
