I wouldn't say "play" but rather do, practice, study, or learn. Jujutsu, judo, and aikido are all good choices IMO. I'm studying Kali at the moment.

Depends on what you want out of it, if anything.

Depends on your goals. If goals are MMA then jujitsu and/or kickboxing. Particularly muay thai.

martial arts is a life-style much like bodybuilding, putting the word play is insulting to alot of us that live the life-style.

Well I personally grew up wrestling(mostly greco) and boxing. Later moved to BJJ, judo and boxing(limited thai). All martial arts require cardio so you will have to adjust your calories. If you just looking for self defense boxing, judo or muay thai. Most of the others are pretty useless.

bjj and capoeira are NOT martial arts. martial arts are the traditional self-defense methods of asia. they're called martial arts because the millitary used to use them. but anyway, i prefer ninjukai taijutsu. although it's technically not a martial art, i think bjj is good to learn too

Brazilian Jiu jitsu is extremly effective and efficient also, however if your interest is self defense then you need to find a dojo that works more No-Gi type training, because most jiu jitsu schools once you have done about two months you will be learning only specific competition techniques that are designed to defeat another skilled jiu-jitsu guy wearing a Gi and that will take you in a different direction from self-defense.
Advanced competition brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an awesome game which requires great skills and is very fun and challenging, but in the streets/bar/dark-alley your not going to be performing an advanced-gogplata-escape which transitions into a clock-gi-choke!!

I practiced judo for 17 years. If you're going to do this I would pick one that has practical applications. Stay away from stuff like Tae Kwon Do but I'm sure you already knew that.

I took akido as an elective my senior year. It was fun but I'd probably try something else if I chose a martial arts
