Solid food > Whey?
I hear conflicting opinions relating to post workout protein consumption. Some say solid food is better, some say shakes are better. It makes sense to me that a protein shake would digest quicker and therefore be a better choice for post workout food. But is that true?

A shake will digest faster, yes.
I consume a shake containing:
10g BCAA's
10g Leucine
5g Creatine
Oats
5-6g Om ega-3.
30mins later (approx) I then consume a meal containing carbs, protein, fats.
Usually 2 breats of chicken with a white potato, vegtables and a teaspoon of olive oil.

I don't use shakes at all in my diet, except for with breakfast only 1 heeping scoop of whey... because usually I am not hungry in the morning.
Anyway, I eat a huge meal 15-30 minutes after my workout.
Right now it's:
7oz chicken breast
1/4C quinoa
1/2C black beans
1/2oz almonds
5g fish oil
sometimes some veggies in there too.

I pretty much do something really close to Swifto. Immediatly post workout:
BCAA's (Pill form)
O m e g a-3 (Pill form)
5g Creatine
5g L-Glutamine
Oats and whey protein
Then about 45 min after that I eat a real meal.

I always prefer real food, but let's face it...eating 5000 clean calories a day isn't the easiest thing in the world. While on cycle I usually down 3 ON Whey shakes a day...or try to anyway, in addition to food and casein at night.

The only shake in my diet is immediately after working out.. no more than an hour later I eat a decent size meal which usually includes top round steak.

I put about a 1/3 cup of ground oats in my pwo whey shake. That equates to and additional 110 calories most of which comes from the 20 carbs in the oats. I take whole oats and grind them in the blender.
I personally don't think that eating 30-45min after the pwo shake is an issue. The way I envision it (which may be wrong) is that the whey is processed fast and is meant to just get nutrients in your system asap. The meal you eat 30-45 min later is digested over time which provides sufficient spacing between the pwo shake and meal. Even if it follows a little close your body is starved for nutrients from the workout it welcomes the added fuel.

yeah solid food will not benifit you most times like the WHEY pro shake, it only takes a whey pro shake 20 mins to metabolise the protein and make it available as with real food it could take up to 24 hours (beef) stick with the protein shake and be sure to take in some simple carbs (SUGAR) As this will raise your insulin levels (good thing)

i like whey first thing upon waking to stop any catabolism that start occuring at night...and immidiatly post workout other than that i prefer real food.......i read an article in eather MD or muscle mag that had a university study that proved that there was no difference in lbm gained between the subjects that eather ate whole foods or whey shakes....the major difference in my opinion is that whole foods take longer to digest and make you feel fuller longer.....again thats just one study and if you searched long enough you could prob find studys that may prove otherwise......

2-3 heaped tablespoons. Not a great deal.
The added Leucine will also cause a spike in insulin levels.
