Maltodextrin nutrition labeling?
Hi,
If maltodextrin is just a form of sugar, then why on most maltodextrin products does it read, for example, 50g of maltodextrin per serving and the label will say like 1 or 2g of sugar per serving. Shouldn't it be like 50g of sugar per serving? Thanks

I'm not really big on supplements but I think I remember hearing (probably on this forum years ago) that maltodextrin had a very low glycemic index so that would be a good thing and very "complex carb like". I chalked it up as that and never really thought about it again because it's not like I do meal replacements anyways. but now that I look it up I see that it actually has a very high glycemic index. It is starch derived and that's probably how they get by calling it a carb a "sweet polysaccharide" is what it's classified as so the starches are partially broken down already when its made which makes it so easy to digest. I guess that's just another thing you have to look at when inspecting your labels, but yeah... It looks like it's totally a "sugar in disguise" Haha, and all along I thought those met-rx meal replacements and protien bars weren't as bad as some of the other ones I saw on the market because they were lower in sugar... turns out they were just using maltodextrin to get those numbers on their labels Good to know

I was going to use a little both pre ad postworkout, but am thrown off by the nutrition labeling as it says that 40g of maltodextrin only has 1g of sugar. I thought it would be 40g of sugar.

scratch that! table sugar is faster than maltodextrin sorry! maybe this will help.
Fructose 32
Lactose 65
Honey 83
High fructose corn syrup 89
Sucrose 92
Glucose 137
Maltodextrin 137
Sugar, White 142
Glucose tablets 146
Maltose 150
Maltodextrin is a complex sugar that the human digestive system breaks down into simple sugars very quickly. As such, it provides a longer 'burn' of energy that sucrose or fructose.
That's why it's used in a lot of endurance enhancing products like gels that cyclists use on the road.Last edited by **TOP**; 01-16-2010 at 07:00 PM.
