    Alternative to prescription vitamin D?

I've been taking 5000ius of d3 for a while but my blood test recently showed that it's quiet low. Dr. gave me 50000 iu pills to take twice a week but it's 30.00 for 8 pills! Can't I just take like 10 of my 5000 ius? Lol I mean 30.00 for 8 pills seems like a lot.

Technically yes. Your prescription is likely not D3 however. Probably D2 (Drisdol).

D3 has been proven better than D2 in a couple of studies. You can get 50,000 D3 tabs. Bio-Tech makes them and it's what I use between injections.

Yes, I saw where it raises free test levels... it helped mine a lot, which was about 7 or so months ago, but I don't know what happened... still was taking 5,000 IU's a day but it was just very low.

Oddly enough I've been riding my recumbent bike for about a month now.. I do 60-70 minutes 4-5 times a week and my total test is at 834 from the mid 600 range... my doc even asked me if I had been using anything that might raise it. Of course i'm sure it's from working my legs and I always try to push more than just being in the fat burning zone. I try to beat my numbers each time... otherwise it gets to old.

Anyway, I just thought that it was interesting that test was up and D was down so low.

I actually heard D2 is counterproductive and not good for you, better off taking a large dose of D3, I have the same problem and it can be difficult to raise.

    That's D2, aka Drisdol.

isn't oral mouth absorption better then passing VIT D via the stomach?

i get my injection every 6 weeks, and it stays at a great number. If i run tabs or caps i see no increase or maintenance, only below normal.

You should be able to find some supplement D3 at a MUCH lower price. Something way more affordable and my opinion more effective.

Didn't even know there was an injectable form, can you buy it somewhere or should I just ask my doctor ?

Doctor may prescribe, but generally only if you're deficient and orals failed.

Sorry about bumping a somewhat older thread here but I didn't see the need in starting a new one since this existed...

Question: How much D3 are you guys supplementing with on a daily basis? Especially if you've had BW showing low levels. Thanks guys.

Broad question Odins. But I think the average person should take 2000 IU daily, and if levels are low, 5000 daily. I take more, a whole lot more.

Thanks Austinite...yeah, kinda painted with a broad brush there didn't I? Just trying to feel out the ranges different people are using. Last BW I had ran put me at 20ng/mL. WAY low. I was given the typical 10000 iu per week protocol...didn't seem to help me at all. So I just started buying the 5000iu at wally world and take 2 a day. I'm still not feeling much of a difference like so many seem to experience when getting levels up to par. Just wondering if I should bump again?

I wouldnt bump until you get blood work again. Let your new protocol take its course for a while and see how well it sticks. 20 is LOW! Hopefully it gets up there for you.

Thanks for the responses fellas. I was given the 50k once per week D2 on my first low level D results, then 10k D3 once per week. Next stop, doc's office
