best way to find out bodyfat?

I really would like to know my bodyfat as I am starting a new cycyle. My gym does not have anyway to find out. Is the only way to go to the DR? I would order one of those grip machines for like $40 if you guys can verify it is accurate.

the Electronic ones aren't really that accurate especially for bodybuilders or athletes

the best way is to call a gym or physical therapist office and see if they can do it with Skin Fold Calipers, that is one of the best ways.

I have a scale that uses the same technology, and I have used several of the hand grip types. I don't think they are too accurate. My readings can change just from using it again in 5 minutes on almost anyone that I have ever tried.

i think there is a formula similar to the harris benedict HB- bmr formula, if you web browse harris benedict there may be a link to an accurate bf% reading based on all your vital stats.

the calipers are ok and the digi scales you stand on arent bad. but i think there is a more precise way with a similar to HB formula.

    hope this helps.

underwater weighing is the most accurate. I believe it is called hydrostatic weighing. Next best thing is skinfold calipers. They are pretty expensive and you need to have someone take your measurements. bioempidence is the handheld and scales with metal plates to put your feet on. I guess they are convenient and give you a rough ideal but they underestimate alot, and many things can cause them to have varied readings. As to where to get them done at im not to sure. good luck!

Also, post up a pic. alot of the guys on here can give you a very close estimate just by seeind some pictures of you.

I think skin fold calipers are simply off.

We all hold fat in different spots.

the spots you are suppose to pinch, and measure are all spots I carry very little fat.

My lower abs, just skin, you can see veins.

    My tricepts, no fat, zero

My back, guys really don't carry much fat there.

I carry my fat in my lower/mid stomach area and a little on the love handles.

I'd probably caliper out to around 9% right now, but I certainly feel I'm approaching single digits, but am still around 12%.

3% is not a HUGE number, but when you are talking the difference between 9 and 12, it's 25% off.

I wish there was a good electronic BF caliper. For now, I just use the mirror.

I can assure you the electrical impedence body fat testers are bunk. Get some calipers!

I had the electronic hand held device show me at 19% which was obviously off. THen I had the calipers done by the same guy and it showed 13% which is what we had guessed anyway.

Consistency is more important than accuracy when measuring bodyfat. Obviously we want to get a good idea of where we are sitting but your body comps are a tool to use so you know what adjustments need to be made to your diet and cardio regime to reach certain goals. This is why I am a fan of calipers, done by the same person using the exact same method everytime. They might not be quite as accurate as hydrostatic but they should be very consistent. Also, not many people want to spend the money to get hydro'd 2-3 times a month but there is no reason you and your workout partner cant caliper each other as often as needed for free.

that is the best advice when talking about calipers. MEASURING METHODS ONLY!
