    What is it about calves?

Why do calf muscles burn when you work them? It isn't like your biceps or triceps burn when you work them like calves. That, and why the hell do my feet feel like they are being squashed in a vice?

It is because of their fiber type ratio and primary means of converting fuel to energy to perform work. All muscle will "burn", but it requires different levels/duration/intensity of stimulus to cause this because fiber type ratios vary across differing muscle groups. Calves burn quickly because they are postural muscle used to low intensity with high frequency of contractions. When you start working them with an intensity that is above what they are used to their ability to clear lactate decreases resulting in accumulation of lactate. This leads to you feeling the "burn" as a result of the acid base shift (p.H) which causes discomfort.

The other reason could be that you simply have tight calves that need to be stretched more often. Try doing it between sets and see if it helps with the discomfort.
