    WOW, what an amazing bridge

never ceases to amaze me what humans can do. This bridge just built in france in taller than the eiffell tower. I have a feeling people are going to be flying to france to commit suicide. BTW the French still suck.

I'm trying to figure out how they built the freaking thing. Those long expanses between pillars are long how did they get those massive multi ton concrete pieces up there and then hold them in place.

I am in the bridge foundation business and have been following this bridge for a couple of years. There are others as beautiful and amazing as this. Engineering is amazing sometimes. It is the worlds tallest passenger vehicle bridge. There is one higher here in the US but it is for people only.

Well, regardless of how much Americans dislike the french, the fact remains that when it comes to engineering they are top notch...

    A few examples?

    Well, that bridge obviously
Then there is the TGV trains
The only supersonic passenger plane the concorde (in coop with the UK)
The new Queen Mary 2 was built in France
Airbus is the only company giving Boeing a really hard time
One of the only other countries with a *serious* space program (more commercial sattelites are being put up in french Ariane rockets than by NASA right now)
The Tigre attack helicopter (by Eurocopter a french-german company) rivals most top US attack copters....
At least half the components in your (and our!) power grids come from Alcatel in france...
    And the list goes on...

my job is in the area of the foundation posts which are called drilled shaft foundations or caissons. I would have a hard time explaining that question.

try www.dfi.org there is plenty of info on there, mostly foundation related but if you look there may be some info.

I'm an Engineer. I wish I was French so I could be better!
I'm Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineer though...totally different than this type of structural Engineering. France or not...this bridge could be in freakin'
Pakisatan...it's still an amazing Engineering accomplishment. Wow.

Well in not an engineer but I deal with them daily, let me crunch some numbers, run some calculations on that and I'll get you a figure! lol
