I was talking to a physiotherapist and we both agree..the smith machine isn't safer biomechanically. So i now avoid going there altogether. The physio i talked to injured his back doing the smith machine because of the restricted range of motion and alteration to the natural pressing movement.
When i don't have someone to spot me i carve about 10-20 pounds off my max squat.. and free-squat alone.Having failed in the bottom position several times..i've learnt how to get from under the bar in the bottom position safely.
Bottomline tho Alex... failing in the bottom shouldn't be ego-crushing...

I don't use 'em.
I find i squat heavier without 'em...they increase my intra-abdominal pressure a bit more than is comfortable.Squats and deadlifts are Heaven without 'em.

My first thoughts exactly when I read this mess. GOOD piece of advice from a thread that totally went to s.h.i.t. Since everyone else is giving their thoughts too.

If someone posts something and asks for an HONEST critique of their body I admire the people that actually go out of their way to pinpoint their weaknesses, but if someone is just basically stating something that happened to them and what they were attempting and someone calls him tiny......Wtf??? These type of things shouldn't go on here...Regardless who knows who...Who's bigger then who..Who's an internet badass...Or who has the biggest internet d.i.c.k........JMO

Why are you sorry you failed? A different movement than you're used to and could be your head wasn't into the game that day. Free weight I can push 415-430 for about 6-10 reps (depending on where my heads at and how good I feel, somedays I feel like I can move a ton, other days I don't even bother trying cause I know it's not going to happen) but when I do squats on a smith I can do a little more. However, when I lift with a smith machine I drop a good portion of the weight so I can go beyond parallel or start out of the hole.
So you didn't have a good lift.....let it go and hit again another day. If you can't lift what you planned or wanted too then drop the weight and see how many reps you can get at that weight next time.

Fair enough. Too be honest I'm not going to say yay or nay about that situation. I will say if you have ever been around wpo events or nasa or any competitive organizations..I'm sure that guys squatting 600 raw weighing 160 pounds would really suprise you.
Also, I would also honestly question ANYONE'S depth on their squat, mainly because I've been around powerlifting for awhile and I realize there is a big difference between a competition squat and a gym squat....I'm sure Rjstrong, pheezer or powerlifter could back that up..
