what was your motivation to start lifting?
Forgive the noob if this question has been asked before (I suspect it probably has) but it is an interesting and insightful question IMO...
there are so many reasons from the dude that got sand kicked in his face to just needing to grow for a sport... but let's be honest and tell why
I'll start...
...actually for me it was a number of reasons,
1) I am the shortest male in my family 5'8" so that is one... short guy complex
2) All the males in my family were big (as in wide) muthas
3) I am a geek..always have been so the bigger I get, the less people are inclined to pick on the fact I am a uber dork... this works for me since I am a pacifist
anyway.. let's hear 'um

To kick my father's ass of coarse!
Anyway... my teenage desire to get big presented a new world that fascinated me... muscle mechanics, kinesiology, nutrition - there was so much to learn! I always had a hard time reading books in my teens - but then found myself going through volumes of books like some go though newspapers. Basically, bodybuilding helped me rediscover the power of books and good authors (still don't care to read fiction though ), understand my body's systems more and develop skills that would help me as a man - like dedication, motivation, discipline...

My reasons: I was always in shape, 3 sport guy (soccer, basketball, track) and then I went to college and within 2 years I had stopped being active. About 20 pounds of beer fat later I looked at myself in the mirror and didn't recognize myself. Now I'm still 20 pounds heavier than my soccer/bball/track weight but it isn't fat (well it isn't all fat I'm still around 14-16%).

i was working at food lion, and a pissed off customer (him 40 something, me 18 at the time), threated to kick my butt. he was about 6'1 or so, and he was the rough drunken single-minded redneck type. he was pissed off about something i did, and made a huge scene in food lion. i weighed 135 at the time, i highly doubt i had a single muscle in my body. with me being the way i am now, i hope i see him, and i hope the offer is still on the table.

I was true to the bone fat kid, so after all the teasing and name calling and such I decided to do something about it, change the way I look, my favorite thing now is to see the people I went to school with in the past and have them give me compliments instead of tryin to tear me down, builds a little self confidence, which is helpful, also I am studying engineering and want to be the worlds biggest engineer so its a goal

What's funny is that answer is at least PART of the reason somewhere along the line that we began to lift, kept lifting, got lean, or some other accomplishment.
Except Will of Iron, he just wants to ream his own stink funnel.

I lift because I loved lifting when I was in my thirties, quit for a few years and I'm back because I like being strong. And I like playing with people's preconceptions of what fifty year old women can and should be or do - I have more ink than any three guys at my gym, and twice the motivation. It's amazing to reinvent yourself, and this is a great way to do it. I fully intend to be 80 and still working out, with a studmuffin boyfriend and a smile on my face.

When I was 17 my boyfriend told me I was fat, (asshole bf, I was far from), but of course I developed a complex , and a cardio addiction, (hence the name ) and got really skinny. too skinny...didn't look good, started lifting weights with my older sister, learned about how to eat, got hot and dumped the bf

no doubt females and just looking like a stick figure (6'1'' 135 lbs. before i started lifting) were my motivation. arnold and lee haney were and still are my inspiration to keep at it for life.

Actually Used to do the drinking, dope and pizza routine 24/7, finally got tired of it and realized I could do much more. Shaped up, and got my life together and became successful. As someone else said, the hard work and dedication gave me some of the skills needed for me to be succesful and were im at in life now.
And to be honest I get a kick out of seeing old friends who saw me as a Fool in highschool and then a brainer/ health nut in college to being a successful graduate, and as of 2 weeks ago engaged to my Darling starting a new chapter in life.
To be honest working out really did help me out it started a huge change in my life!
It's amazing what a positive energy it can bring to someone's life.

was a fat 11 year old, and had been watching wrestling and in awe of bodybuilders since i could walk lol. stranger still, i was an avid drawer, and whenevr i drew pictures of men, they would always be huge lol. i also wanted to start wrestling myself. when i was 12, got sick of being a fat kid, started training, as id always imagined that id be a big muscular bastard when i was an adult. im 21 next month, and 9 years on, im so glad i joined the gym, best decision of my life

There are a lot of reasons that motivate me for lifting, but #1 is sports, I've been playing sports my whole life and the weight room has been a big contribution to my success. Other reasons include...looking good (of course) and feeling like I accomplished something on the day while most of america (70% +) sit around and eat Taco Bell.
