It looks like they're coming out with an HD Tivo unit this year late summer or fall. It's going to have built in HD cable support so I probably just go with HD cable instead of satellite. This unit looks hot plus you can add an external SATA hard drive for expansion. The unit is rumored to sell for $500-$800 but most think it will be less since Tivo is pushing for a subscription model like cell phones where the hardware is cheap or free and you buy a subscription contract.
TiVo Series 3 HD DVR
The Series 3 will feature six overall tuners, 2 each for over-the-air transmissions, digital NTSC (including HD), and ATSC. The upshot is that it can record anything off the airwaves, digital cable including HD content, and older analog cable content. While this may look like overkill, TiVo's plan was to make it possible to record two streams simultaneously, from any given source. When it comes to output, the unit is reasonably stocked with HDMI, component, S-Video, and composite cable support, and it supports outputs up to 1080i. The remote control is largely the same as previous generations, though this one is now backlit, adds a new button for aspect switching (16:9 to 4:3), and is textured on the bottom in such a way that you can easily tell which way the remote points forward while in your hand. (The peanut shape of the remote control has been known to fool people in the dark, as they hold it backwards and press all the wrong buttons.)
The unit also has a new LCD screen on the front that will alert you to what's recording, as well as basic play, pause, rewind, fast-forward controls.
Other specs include built-in Ethernet, 2 USB ports, a modem, RCA or digital optical audio, and a little surprise: an external Serial ATA interface that will allow you to manually attach extra storage to your TiVo—no hacking or expensive mods required. This is a good move on their part, because as the HTPC revolution takes off, TiVo could otherwise look as though it has limited storage capabilities. On the other hand, storage attached to the external interface is not "removable" in the sense that you can disconnect the drive and take it to a friend's house. It is designed to augment the main unit's storage, and it is possible that portions of a TV show would be recorded across drives.
