Storing body fat in the winter

Whats the deal here? Do we store more body fat in the winter as apposed to the summer months? I heard a random comment at the gym about this. Seems like it would make sense. Any thaughts?? Is it easier to mass gain in winter or summer?

I've noticed I store more fat in the winter...

Now is it due to a normal body reaction to colder weather? Or is it simply because I am a bit less active in the winter (no cycling, and I hate most winter sports). Is it both?

    who knows...

Naaa....not both, just that you're lazy in the winter. It's ok Red...don't think less of ya for it. LOL

Yes, its a normal physiological adaptation to climate. When your body is exposed to prolonged periods of cold it triggers the body to slow the metabolic rate to conserve both fat stores and energy. When you get cold the body has to expend vast amounts of energy to bring normal homeostatic conditions under control. Fat also acts as an insulator to the internal organs to keep core body temperature normal.

When the climate gets colder you should actually adjust your calories accordingly. You're body will stay at a slightly lower temperature and you won't burn as many calories normally than you would running around in the heat. Now if you have an office job and you only get in the whether when going to your car or walking in the grocery store etc.. then face it you're just a fatass and use the winter as an excuse to get fat LOL..
But trust me when you diet the fat off come spring you're gonna lose LBM in the process.

Many people ruin their progression year to year because of this, glad you brought this question up.

I actually did this in winter/spring last year and it worked quite well. Its all trial/error. I noticed I could get away with more cals in the spring/summer than the winter time

This is the first time I did a winter LEAN bulk and I'm sooooo glad I did!!

I swear I gained as much muscle as on my Lee Proest type bulkers in the past, but stored a lot less fat - I just didn't obsess over gaining weight on the scale!

It seems my cutting for the summer will be at least 50 % easier this year

I usually weigh more over winter due to a poor diet. I spend less time planning a proper diet, and spend more time doing a dirty bulk.

I usually store 3 or 4 pounds in the fridge for winter.
