5th grade i built a model airplane (not a pos plastic thing from walmart i scratch built an airplane out of balsa wood) and did a presentatioin on the characteristics of flight and the forces involved....ie lift, drag, thrust, gravity. i got 1st in my school then 2nd or 3rd at district and went to state but did not win.. oh well it was a bad ass prject tho. something to consider....planes/rocketry are pretty neat ones with TONS of info out there....dont let him be that kid that makes the paper mache volcano lol there ahd to have been like 20 kids with that at my science fair.

If he wants to win for sure, he's just gotta do something that's not already done to death. Like something current and interesting. There's a lot going on right now with dental stem cells that i'm sure would be news to most of the people at the science fair.

My 4th and 5th grade sicence projects both won and very simple as well.
1) Which liquid rots teeth fastest (Orange Juice, Apple Juice, Soda, Water, Milk etc.) Go to the dentist ask for some teeth and soak em in each for a week and take pictures as each day occurs....and there you go.
2) Which shape holds an object up the best, circle, triagnle, square, trapezoid, hexagon.
