If you don't have a job, I'd start getting out of bed at 0400 for a work out and cardio. And start practicing to keep your mouth shut. And DO NOT sandbag PT. It can open all kinds of doors after basic if you're a stud.

When you get off the plane, brace yourself to get yelled at a lot. It's just their job, they get paid to do that, so don't take it personally. The verbal abuse will weed out the guys who can't put up with the general BS and stupidity that characterizes much of military life. So don't worry about it . . .
You'll want to practice how not to smile when you're about to laugh your ass off. Eventually, your TI will harrass someone by walking up in front of them, staring at them, and saying, "What are you smiling for? Do you like me, airman?" If he does that to you, the correct response is, "Sir! No sir!" without a smile.
Um, in Basic Training, whenever you speak to anyone with more rank than you (which will be just about everybody), you ALWAYS preface whatever you say with, "Sir!" and then say what you have to say, and then finish with "Sir!"
Example: "Sir! Airman Smith reporting as ordered, Sir!"
When you first get to your barracks, they'll put your civilian clothes and whatever else you took with you in storage. If you have a few small items you'd like to have when you finish Basic Training, bring them along. You won't have access to them until you're done, so keep that in mind; nothing bulky, not more than what would fit in a lunchbox.
About being "invisible:" If you think you might make the USAF your career, if you volunteer for things like "Squad Leader" (they'll be looking for 4 of 'em), if your papers show that you volunteered for this job, and did a good job of it, it will help down the road. My advice, though, is to wait a couple weeks before you volunteer for any of the leader posts, because the first few guys invariably fail. You'll want to watch and learn how to do the leader's job before you volunteer.
After you get issued all your AF uniforms, they'll want you to take out all the little "Inspected By 42" paper tags. Make sure you check EVERY pocket and get all those tags out.
One more thing -- one thing they'll be looking for is teamwork. Help the slowest & dumbest guys along from time to time, and you'll get some brownie points from the TI, which will make your stay a little easier for you.
Good luck . . .

My point is that they want you to preface and end everything you say with the word "Sir!"
Such as, "Sir! Yes, Sir!"
"Sir! I am happy to be here, Sir!"
"Sir! I am ready to run another mile, Sir!"
"Sir! There is a dead horse in the bus, Sir!"
"Sir! Flight 2343 has returned from church, Sir!"
. . . that sort of thing . . .
ugh . . .

Huh . . . when I was in Basic, if you didn't preface and end everything you said with "Sir!" you got yer butt whipped . . .
Guess things have changed . . .

In the army if you call an nco a sir, it's a one way ticket to their shit list. I remember there was this short, pudgy college grad who enlisted as an e-4 instead of becoming an officer for whatever reason. He was the worst recruit we had. Couldn't shoot, couldn't PT, couldn't march, couldn't remember shit, just totally worthless.
Anyway, he couldn't get it through his head that you aren't supposed to call nco's "sir" so he goes and addresses one of the drills as a sir and of course he gets yelled at, the drill is freaking out. He says "sorry sir" and the drill freaks out even more, says do not call me "sir" do you understand? 'yes sir' the dumbass replies. This seriously went on for at least 3 or 4 minutes before the guy finally realized that the drill just didn't want to be called sir.

my best friend was in the airforce and when he went to tech school they got 4man rooms and could go diff places off duty, go to the gym when they wanted after classes/training, play playstation, almost like college. Sounded awesome.
he got in the best shape of his life there he was like 6'6 (yeah tall bastard) and down to like 215 was super lean.....
but dont bring anything with you, you can go to the exchange and get clothes and supps to get you by untill you grad.
usually by this time, your ti's are relaxed with you, treat you more like a soldier and what not......im sure some other members who are in the airforce can tell you.Last edited by MFT81; 04-17-2007 at 12:35 PM.

My Grandpa was a TI in the 60's, He told me a story one time where one ti ran a whorehouse out of an empty baricks and would charge 5.00 a pop to the trainees until his XO caught him.
I doubt you'll experience this. sorry.

You can workout. We had PT 3x a week which was just calisthentics followed by a 30 min of run. You dont need to bring sups, you should be able to get pretty much everything on base. My base had a GNC. I know its overpriced, but it worked for the duration of tech school.
