Armed Services Concern
You all know how I've been considering looking into the Armed Forces... The Marines and Coast Guard are my two top choices... Now my concern is I "used" to have ADHD... Now I know that doesn't exclude you from service but being on medication does... Now I stopped taking medication, I believe middle of my Sophomore or Junior year of highschool and I've been fine ever since (I have a 3.4 in college)... Anyways I read how the Navy would accept you having been off for medication for 6 months but I'm not sure of the others... Now another thing... I went into the Coast Guard Recruiting place about a year ago and talked with a recruiter... He told me that because I had taken the medication that I was automatically exempt from joining the Coast Guard... Now it had been a year since I took the medication and I was really bummed out about not... Question is to all you Armed Forces guys, do you think I should go back, be a little more forward with the guy, It's been about 3 years since I've taken medication and all my symptoms are gone from ADHD... I just don't wana get shot down again!

Don't bother telling the recruiters. If you did you would be standing in one more line during processing, and there are lots of them.
You'd probably end up in line for 45 minutes with every other person who took whatever head-drug that they no longer take or need to answer a medical officer's 5 questions about your current mental state. Boring.
Just remember that it is on record that you never took that medicine. It may not seem like a big deal after a few years in, but you may have raised a little hell by then, and they may not be so fond of you anymore, and would like nothing more then to can your ass.

Just don't tell them, it's as simple as that. There is no way for them to get access to medical records of yours from your civilian past unless you start disclosing things. I ended up disclosing all kinds of things about my past probably due to some subconcsious voice telling me not to join. I was medically disqualified from the services and then managed to get in on a waiver. But it was all unneccessary, all I had to do was keep my mouth shut in the first place and it would've saved a lot of time and troubles.

Yep, I'm in total agreement with the two fine gentlement ahead of me here. Don't disclose it and forever keep it to yourself, meaning tell no one during your period of service. The only things that turn up on their radar are the felony convictions and if you don't have any of those, then you're good to go. Best wishes and good luck!

dont disclose any medical condition you have. keep copys of all your medical records, while in, and really more important, after you muster out. service-connected medical conditions are covered for life.

Well actually... I was in the *** for the Marines during my senior year of highschool... a few days before I was to go in they took me into MEPS one last time for a final check up... Well since my job was going to need a Secret Clearance or whatever... I had read earlier that they actually send the FBI to your parents and close friends to see if you hadn't disclosed anything and since I knew my parents wouldnt lie to someone like that I told them about the ADHD... Now I dont know if that FBi thing was true, but I read it several places over the internet and I didnt want to really screw myself and end up with a job I didnt like... Anywho... They asked for documents on it, I gave them some.. they wanted more so I gave them more... they said it didnt have the right information, blah, blah, blah.. back and forth week after week they kept postponing me... Eventually they asked for character references so I just said **** em and I went to college... But not ionno.. Im not gonna have enough money to transfer to a 4 year university, I dont wanna get stuck in some crappy job, and I wanna kickstart my life... just worried i ****ed myself up really bad... Also, I remember hearing awhile ago that they actually clear your information from the system after a period of time.... Is that true?

just because you cant transfer to a 4 year uni, dosent mean you have to choose between Mcdonalds and The Military.

Well since you already told him that changes things. You could get in at this point, possibly with a waiver if it came to that. Now let me tell you that you are joining for the wrong reasons. This kickstart to your life sounds real nice, especially if this were like 1996. Getting shot at isn't all it's cracked up to be and maybe you're one of the like 10% that really believes in the current conflict and we're there liberating these guys, but all I hear about is college and a lack of income.
Listen to Spartan, if you join you are going to war. It's easy to brush that aside while you're chilling as a civilian. It's a real wake up call when you find yourself in full battle rattle strapped to the seat inside a C130 headed into Balad to start the most miserable 15 months of your life.
Don't get me wrong, the forces need guys joining up these days. But we're mostly among friends here so what I am saying is only some precautionary words that I hope you consider. These days your only safe bet might be the coast guard and I think that would help you reach your goals. On the other hand scraping together enough cash to attend a 4 year school is something you can most definitely achieve without going this route.

Dude, if you want to enlist for college money and to jumpstart your life, then I'd recommend the Air Force. The AF even has their own college! If you enlist in the Marines or the Army and you're a grunt, then you'll be visiting the Sunni Triangle, Falluja, or Sadr City pretty quickly and you may end up without a life to jumpstart.

The guard has so much more flexibility than active duty. There are always trips you can sign up for to make some extra scratch, all the while maintaining a civilian life. I don't know much about the coast guard, but it seems like it would be cool. If they offered the same benefits as the AF, I would def look into it. Like these guys said, only tell them what they need to know. If you were a schizophrenic, then you may would want to disclose that, but ADHD is nothing. Best of luck

Don't even worry, I have ADHD too and I even told my recruiter (Marines) he asked me if im still on meds I said ive been off for 3 years he then said to just not mention it.
Also if you have bacne from roids when u get a questionare it will say do you have a skin disease..acne, ect. Just say no or else you must leave and get a waiver saying you only have acne. So I said no and the MEPS doctor looked at my back asked me if I could carry a backpack and if it was progressive. and that was the end of that.
Yea they won't find out, unless you tell them, or have a mental breakdown or something.

War is a serious thing I'm in Anbar Province right now, but as far as meps goes I have Asthma and they let me in. I told my recruiter and he said If I said anything about it again, I would be out. He said No= numerous opportunities and yes = your enlistment stops. But seriously go for it I love this sh*t!

Inherit, Thanks I just love it because I don't have the wife nagging me and when I'm not in the gym, I'm in sector with the adrenaline pumping. But hopefully it ends soon. After this tour I will have been here 39 months since 2003.
