My toilet keeps running, what do I do?

After I flush, it won't ever stop running water. I took the top off and played around with the arm that connects the handle to the stopper to no avail. Help.

make sure the tank plug is closing so that the water is filling and not just draining, if that is happening, make sure the floater is going up all the way so that the water stops filling.

Alright, #12 helped me fix my leaky shiter. Problem solved.

I thereby proclaim this Ian's personal post whore thread, until it gets locked. Which it invariably will.

That worked for awhile, but it's like I took all the "play" out of the handle and that stopped workiing.

I'm too late but a common problem is that the float (big black bulb thing) starts to take in water and weights it down so you have to replace it or empty the water and seal it good. I own a tanning salon and there is always something to fix so you either learn these things or pay someone all the time. Ever price plumbing

If the problem reoccurs, replace the flapper ball (the rubber thingy that closes at the bottom to stop the water flow, and remover the old ballcock (the big plastic ball on the lever that raises to shut the water off). Take the whole ballcock assembly loose at the bottom of the tank, (turning off the valve behind the commode to stop the water flow first) and replace it, I would recommend getting a Fluidmaster 200a, you can get them at any Lowe's or Home Depot, and probably at some smaller hardware stores.

lol thanks. Actually I'm the general foreman over the maintenance department at a government facility with about 2000 housing units. I've been there for just over 19 years, so if it's part of a house and broken chances are I can help.

fluidmaster is the way to go, it's real self explainitory. It runs like 12 bucks you can get them at about any hardware store. They come in a green box. All you do is shut the water off at the cut off valve under the toilet, flush the toilet to empty the tank, take the old crap out and but the new stuff in.

I rent, so no. The lady who owns the place just started her own property management company, and she sends her troll boyfriend over to do everything. He can't mow a friggen lawn for Chrisake, so toilet duty is all me.

When I moved into my apartment my toilet made a super-loud farting sound whenever I flushed. I took the lid off the back and turned the knob thingy until it quit.
