I keep a Glock 21 with an M3 tactical light on it in a Gunvault GV2000 (rapid access) safe secured to the nightstand on my side of the bed. I have medium sized hands and the G21's grip was a bit too big, so I sent it to Robar for grip reduction. The grip reduction eliminated the radical stock grip angle of the Glock and shrunk it down so that it fits my hand perfectly. I have two young children, so the Gunvault is a must.
I have a Mossberg 590A1 with Surefire tac light and side-saddle shell carrier in my long gun gunsafe, but if I hear the "bump in the night", the G21 is right there for me.
I've put a lot of rounds downrange in everything from single action autos (1911 & BHP), to revolvers to DA/SA semi-autos and have settled on the Glock as my pistol. In my opinion, the stock trigger pull and the lack of an external safety are just fine. My Glock pistols have been more reliable than my "tuned" single action autos and the finish is good to go.
The 9mm vs. .45 debate is nothing new, but the .45 definitely has better stopping power. That said, the larger round is no good if you cannot get the rounds on target. I shoot a good bit, so I can hit my target accurately with a .45 with no problem.
Some gun stores that have indoor ranges rent pistols for use on their range. Being able to shoot several different types of pistol prior to making your final decision might help influence your decision.
Stay safe.

Get a Springfield Armory XD model. I had a post about this and a couple guys said they like the XD better than the glock. I haven't shot an XD but the glock is a nice handgun.

I hate the xd model, damn thing has the slide too high up (more muzzle flip) I'm a die hard glock fan when it comes to personal defense but I shoot just about anything. Hey Jackal did you see the new glock 21 SF (short frame) yet, it sounds like a sweet gun with a little smaller grip 13 rd magazine too just like your's. ( I read a little bit about it and I guess the sf will fit in the old model but not the other way around since the SF has ambi mag release? I'm just a .40" fan since it has all the stopping power of the .45" with more rounds too For anyone that doubts, get Evan Marshalls street stoppers book which has real world shooting results in it.

Keep a blackhawk .357 mag (old cowboys preference)next to my bed and remington 870 under the bed....when I lived in Utah it was great, a 2 hour course to carry concealed.

Caught a bugaler without a gun like 8 months ago, true story.
Me and a friend got dropped off from the bar at his house. I was like what is up with all these shopping bags on your porch. We were drunk and kinda clueless at the moment, and next thing I look at the door and a guy dressed in all black is running at us. The guy had been bagging up all the shit in the house and putting outside for easy loading into his car. Anyway my friend gets pepper sprayed in the eye while the guy runs past us. We both thought it was someone playing a prank on us with a squirt gun or something for a moment (we were really drunk). I ran after the a-hole, I'm really fast and his car was like 1/8 of a mile away. He was already in the car trying to close the door, and by the time I jumped on him he had the engine running. I was kicking his ass but he got the car into gear, and his foot on the gas. We started going really fast, nobody was driving, ended up fliping the car over. It was his grand-dad's izuzu trooper that he stole earlier that night. Held the guy till the cops got there. The guy was like 30 with a drug problem. Most fun I had all year. The guy got 3 years in prison, wasn't his first offense.

the best home defence weapon IMO is a shotgun. I have a glock 19 (9mm) and a glock 39 (45GAP)...also an ar-15 but that isn't kept loaded. I would go with a 45acp glock for home protection if your set on a handgun...def my next gun.

Just curious-Is any of this advice based on an actual experience?
I haven't read any reference to anyone having actually shot someone. Has anyone ever shot another living being or been shot themselves? I have experiences on both ends, and needless to say it makes an impression.
Don't get me wrong-I am 100% in favor of responsible ownership of firearms and the right to protect your loved ones.
