What I really don't like about AA and NA is that right off the bat, you have to admit to GOD and everyone that you are a complete fvckup (basically) and cannot control yourself. Like Bo said, that will become a self fulfilling prophecy. Now, you need AA and NA, because basically you told yourself, GOD, and everyone else that without it, you can't control your own behavior. So instead of being dependent on some mind altering substance, now you are dependent on a mind altering program. Kind of cultish, it seems to me. But, if it helps people stay clean, and I am sure it does for a lot, and it works for you, cool. I'm just saying what I think about the whole concept.
Also, the GOD thing doesn't sit well with me. What if you don't believe in God, I certainly don't and there are plenty of rational people who don't as well. What court appointed treatment programs are available to the atheists?
That brings up another subject. Often, the US courts will make it mandatory for people to attend AA or NA, which is a religious thing. That is undeniable, the serenity prayer, etc, etc. So where is the separation between church and state? They never seem to offer any other alternative than AA or NA. Like those are the only solutions to these problems and believing in GOD seems to be a big part.
Not trying to piss anyone off, if this stuff works for you, I think it's good. But I take issue with any group wanting me to admit I am powerless and ask for help from imaginary beings.
