Plasma or LCD?
So what is the popular opinion here? I just won a Samsung 40" 1080p LCD through work but I'm going to take it back and upgrade to a bigger TV. I'm wanting 46" or bigger. I have done a lot of research and i am leaning towards LCD. My buddy is a manger at a high-end Best Buy store and has explained many of the advantages/disadvantages of each. Anyone have any input?

I've got a 50" toshiba plasma and I love it. In comparison to my brothers tv's which are both lcd's i'm happy with the choice I made. Not to say that they don't have a great picture as well, but mine just seems to have much more vivid colour.
I still can't get over how good the picture quality is when watching blu-rays either.

If you are only considering flat panel, I 'd go with the plasma. LCD gets really pricey in anything over 40"
It also depends on where you'll be watching it. If there is going to be direct sunlight on the panel, or the room is very bright, plasma tends catch a lot of reflection, so that is another consideration.
Plasma has better contrast and color saturation.Last edited by inheritmylife; 09-16-2007 at 09:27 AM.

i spent some time deliberating over this myself and the general concensous was:
bellow 36" get lcd
and above get plasma, the technology is almst there for large screen lcd's but you dont quite get the contrast or refresh rate of a plasma.

I don't plan on playing video games, I do watch a lot of sports. 2 pluses for plasma. Plasma does offer a bigger screen for the money and better saturation and color. The only thing I am worried about is the glare from the glass panes in the plasma. Also, i keep hearing that LCD is the future of flat panels.

LCDs are actually becoming outdated already. The next newest thing for TV flat panels are called Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) A normal LCD panel has a contrast ratio of about 15,000:1, OLEDs are about 30,000:1. Plus OLEDs can display a true black, which doesn't sound like much, but it's incredible for picture clarity and color. And, OLED panels are about as thick as a piece of construction paper and can bend with out breaking.

Not true with LCDs or plasma.
When I was researching TV's befoe I bought mine I was told that plasmas have a better color and that they are better for movies.
While LCDs have a faster refresh rate and thus better for gaming. You should definetely get a LCD. Because they have the best view angle. This means that you don't have to be sitting right infront to get the best picture.
Get a LCD

simply put
LCDs picture is sharper
Plasma shows better color
LCDs for under 46"
Plasma over 46" for the best price range
The new LEDs are going to replace plasmas in the near future as the price will come down

PLASMA!!! LCD's show a lot of grain in fast motion pictures..... and for the record, Panasonic makes the nicest screens on the market. I bought my fist plasma in 2001 (panasonic) and never had so much as a pixel burn out. Panasonsic screens are used by Bang & Olufsen to make their B&O screens. If that isn't a testiment to its quality, I don't know what is.

I got a 50 inch samsung plasma. When I watch lcd at my girlfriend's house I can see the difference. The plasma colors look more life like. The lcds picture looks "smoother" especially during football games .
By the way I got 50 inch samsung plasma 1,500 bucks including taxes, at that price it doesn't matter plasma's just a great deal right now.

I have a 46" Sony Bravia LCD and it is almost too big. My kids used to sit 1 foot away from our old CRT and I would always tell them to scoot back. Now I don't have to tell them anymore, they can't even see the whole picture if they sit closer than 6-7 feet! Best investment ever...
LCD all the way.
