I Joined the Air Force
After much trial and tribulation the Air Force finally accepted me... The problem was I told them about my history (not current) of ADD and they had me go through a bunch of bs, but I found out today they're going to accept me. I swear in on Thursday and have to give them a list of 5 jobs I would like... So far I got Aerial Gunner and Flight Engineer... So yeh I'm pretty stoked... Oh and Carlos and DSM, I know you're gunna post something about the don't ask don't tell policy, lol, so hah!

don't tell them about the gay porn...
HA! beat DSM and Carlos to it....yes!
But seriously, Congrats man. Serving in the military is definitely an experience that will help you in life..even if you don't stay in the full 20+ years till retirement. You learn disapline and the meaning of hard work. I know you will end up going to the middle east eventually but I hope you get to go places in the UK as well as Japan or Anderson AF base in Guam (really nice place).
Good luck in it. Pay kinda sticks when you first get in but give it a couple years and a couple enlisted ranks up and you'll start making decent cash.Last edited by Dizz28; 11-05-2007 at 05:14 PM.

Should have gotten a job guarantee..not a choice of 5 jobs..
Flight engineer is the better of the ones mentioned, you get a lot of travel pay and flight pay..
gunner is not a good job, on standby a lot, with little light time and no tdy pay..
Good luck..

Well once I pick a list from 5 jobs I believe the one they have available they give me the contract for and I sign.... B52 tail gunner is the last i knew of..
and the load master has skills that translate into civilian life..
plus.. combat aircraft that require "travel all over the world" tend to stay airborn for a very long time.. thus you are based in eu.. just my 1st hand experience..
Enjoy basic, remember that you want to go to church.. every sunday.. you will be one of the few that get to go.. that's where the chicks are..The answer to your every question

If it was me, I'd ask for a job in the military that had skills that would transfer into civilian life. Like electronics. Or plumbing. Or electrician. Or operating bulldozers. Or something like that. But when you go to get a job when your time is up, they say, "It's real nice that you shot them bast--ds from airplanes, but you don't have any skills that we can use. Have a nice day."
Think ahead . . . do what you must, but, think ahead . . .

Loadmaster and crew chief are good choices. Ive only met one aerial gunner, he said it was ok. Firefighter is also a very good job.

Alright guys well I found a job I realy liked, Space Systems Operations... Now from what I understand, I get a list of 5 jobs, give them to the guys at MEPS... They'll keep me updated and let me know when whichever jobs open up, and I choose one. Then they send me the documents to sign for it...

I actually don't know too much right now.. All I know is they keep communication with space crafts and help them and other stuff of that sort. And my recruiter put me on the phone with another recruiter in National City who had the job and said it can transfer into the civilian world working with NASA and other stuff so it sounds like a pretty sweet job. Also, the recruiter from National told me he would only sometimes work 2-3 times a week and 1 time only 3 days in a whole month, lol... But I've always been interested in dealing with space so I'm gonna do what it takes to get this job.. and no I don't have a college degree.. I'll have about 20 some credits if I pass all my classes this semester and I plan on getting it down the line.

ok, sounds sweet.. now lets go to NASA, and see what a candidate for them, what kind of experience and college degrees they have..
the point being, comm jobs are 24/7 a week, computers do a lot of it, but they still need to be monitored and maintained..
the trick is if the school is 6 months or longer, preferable 1 yr of tech school before you are assigned to your 1st duty station then you will know you are in a good field..
there are different skill levels..
after you finish tech school you will have a 3 level, then at your 1st assignment you will be doing book assignments to get to your 5 level.. then you will stay at that level until you are promoted enough to get to a 7 then a 9 level.. E-6 or E-7 for the 9 level..
If you are going into a high demand field, you could get e-3 after completing basic training, that's what i did, and a signing bonus on top of that.. it all depends if you tested high enough and if there is a demand..
good luck..The answer to your every question

Enroll in the Community college of the AirForce, great way to complete a degree.. and your basic training, and tech schools all count towards accredited class work.

Good luck bro! I'm jealous. I've been flying since I was 12 and have seriously considered joining the Air Force in Canada as a pilot but the demand is so low right now it's almost impossible to get in.

I would love to fly but you have to be an officer and right now I don't have the will and money to continue on with college at this point in time, I just want to support myself for sometime and travel... I plan on enrolling in the community college of the Air Force and eventually getting a degree, and so far it looks like something to do with physical fitness or anatomy or something. But yeh, not to many tech school look like their beyond a year, I know most of the special forces are up to 2 years but I don't think those transfer well to civilian jobs, lol...
