get this about a trainer
The guy I use as a trainer never shows up on time. Today he shows up about 30 mins late. I get started without him. He tries to wonder why it takes me more than an hour to usually finish. I kind of blew it off. Then later on I started thinking wtf, He is the guy training me. In other words he made it seem like I am slow. I get pretty po when we schedule a time and he is never there. wtf

The only thing trainers are good for are two things:
1) Training 40-80 year old men/women
2) Wearing baby GAP shirts when coming to work.

man...literally, everything you need to know is on the internet..i was training people before i was even certified..dangerous for legal reasons, i know..just buddies/family..i learned everything i know off the internet..i literally didnt learn a single thing i didnt already know when i took the canfit certification test. within this message board alone, you can learn everything you need to know. stop paying someone to do your research and get readin hommes!!

Not showing up to his appointments on time is unacceptable. Do you pay for a session package?

I made the mistake of wanting to become a trainer or at least learn something more. I paid some money to AFAA in Florida. Unfortunately our instructor was a homosexual that was having problems dealing with his sexuality and his fathers acceptance. I spent several days listening to him tell me why his father did not like him and how his father would never accept his homosexuality. I learned very little about fitness and think that AFAA can stick their program up their butts.
If you are in Florida and trained by an AFAA instructor, did you get this guy that I did?
What a joke!
By the way, I have no problems with gays; at all. I simply do not want to pay to listen to anyone complain about their parents.

Because not everyone gets on Steroid .com and reads up on the latest info. Some people are not self motivated like us and they need guidence and help. There is nothing wrong with that at all. In fact it would be worse not to seek guidence.
And no, it is absoulty not a waste of money IF your trainer does his/her job correctly.
A great example: I had a client tell me that for the first time in YEARS he had the energy to play with his kids in the snow this past winter. So yeah probably worth the 50.00 an hour he paid twice a week.
I dont know about you guys but its pretty fcking amazing that we get to pick other guys brains like muscle science and Nark FOR FREE.
If I had the $ Id hire Nark.
I know what you mean, unfortunatly almost anyone can get certified and become a PT but that shit sorts itself out and those trainers dont last long. But this certainly dosent apply to all of us.

Time for a new trainer!
Another option would be to find a workout partner with more experience than you. I currently work out alone, but the times I've worked out with a partner/friend were the best workouts I've ever had. Just need to find the right partner for you.

Outside the information resource... There're a lot of things you can't learn on your own.
When i say 'can't' I mean.. There're a lot of things which require direction and modification.
I as an experienced trainee and trainer still hire an extra pair of eyes sometimes during contest prep.
Because.. I don't know everything, even if I think I know most everything.
There's always some slight modification that i can learn and institute.
Furthermore...I can't see everything.
There're things some people do subconsciously.. Like raising one shoulder when pressing.. Retracting a single scapula etc.
Things that we don't notice.. that someone else can...
That someone else can see and change... by making us conscious.
There's a lot of info out there... and it helps to hire someone who knows their shit.
Because infinite info is all cool and good... But who has the time to decimate each and every single piece of info?
There aren't enough hours in a day...days in a year.. or years in a lifetime.
I was blessed to have my eyes opened by a coach many years back.
He gave me my platform...and i added information to it over the years.
I doubt I would be anywhere near as versed as I am now if it wasn't for him.
Years later... I've helped hundreds of people get in shape.
I've transformed by body innumerably... all on my own.
However.. I'd still hire him on my next contest prep without question.
There is always something to be learned.
..Always.
Agreed.
Agreed 100%
lol.
Hopefully it stays that way.
I mean... I do, do this for a living.
But I love to give back to the community.
Hopefully the community remains troll-free so I don't have to rethink that.
Allowing you guys to pick my brain keeps me sharp...so it's mutually beneficial.
I'm not insanely expensive at the moment
If you need specialized help... hit me up.
I'm pre-booked straight up til the end of summer.. But after will be cool.
Not sure I agree.
Those guys seem to be fairly prevalent unfortunately.
That's why the profession gets knocked so much.
Personally.. I never use the term 'personal trainer' when referring to myself.
I'm a Fitness Consultant.
That's what i registered my business as.
Up to yesterday I did a small seminar at a modeling agency... The administration contracted me to train their models exclusively.
In the seminar I clearly explained that I am not a personal trainer.
Namely because I'm ashamed of the profession.
Namely because I'm the guy who the personal trainer calls when they come across something with no clear text-book answer.
A lot of personal trainers are just about money.
Not health.
A lot of them are salesmen.

Agreed.
I've been late for very few sessions.
I missed one session due to insomnia..followed by a monumental crash and burn.
I could believe I had overslept.
I called the client immediately.. apologized profusely.
Rescheduled for the same evening... and didn't charge them a penny for the session.
Late for sessions..or missing sessions?
Unacceptable.

In response to MFT and Nark the only problem I have with it though is 90% of the trainers I see out there are not very good and the guy you described Nark that helped you so much in your career it's so hard to find guys like that. It just annoys the crap out of me to hear stuff like my trainer is always late, wtf is that. It's like you pay him/her money and you would at least expect them to show up on time.
Btw, I think it's ok to have a trainer if you really need that one person to motivate you while you are training but then again I know I would never need someone to get me going it's all within ourselves but I can see how other people might.
Anyway, in the end my main point is there's a lot of bad trainers out there and very few good ones, I just have a problem with the bad ones which are the majority, a lot of them you can just tell they don't care either. Maybe it's cause I'm from LA who knows.

True.
It's a pity that some people are in such a hurry.
I'd advise anyone who's thinking about hiring a trainer, to interact with him and his present and past clients.
That way you can gauge what sort of individual he/she is.
Most people just want to jump in the gym.. pay someone some cash..and get abs a week later
