Lawyers will sometimes drop cases when they know they are unable to properly defend their clients. If their lawyers came to realize that they are attempting to defend scum bags, it is very likely they spoke to the judge and were able to remove themselves by proving they could not offer a fair defense due to their knowledge of their past.
As you expected, it is a very good side for the opposition.
