Are you using VMware to emulate Ubuntu? If you do, and if you are running the default configuration you aren't actually online. You are just emulating the network card or bridging the connection between your emulation OS and your Windows OS. You didn't actually install the drivers.

I haven't used VMware in about 2 years, but I do remember there were many tweaks and optimizations I applied to my builds to make the system run smoother. However, at the end of the day, it will NEVER run as smoothly as an actual installation.
Have you considered dual booting Windows and Linux and just playing around with it that way?

VMware sucks bad, it ****ed up my linux partition now i gotta go in and fix it. I didnt even write anything to linux partition via vm. Im on vista right now the stuff sucks. I havent played with ubuntu but fedora is all gui almost so its easy to start off with, and you can still use your consoles so you can get online via gui then research/play with linux from actual linux.

was going to say, if you hate microsoft so much y not duel boot or re-install linux as your OS, you should be able to get hold of most drivers now anyway.

I use Debian sid on all my machines, and Windows has been relegated to my laptop.
Windows is pure garbage, and I can do 99% of my work in Linux. For the remaining 1% I use WinXP in a Virtualbox VM, so I get the best of both worlds in one package

How old is this laptop?? The latest version of Suse should recognize the hardware without any problems. You said you could not "get online". Can you elaborate on that a little? What troubleshooting steps did you take?

If you wanna pick up a book, check out the Bible series on Linux at your local bookstore or on amazon. These books are normally very well written and highly technical.
Personally, my favorite distro at the moment is SUSE. Especially if I'm going to be using the GUI.
