Girls' Basketball team wins 100 - 0
DALLAS -- A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 game has a case of blowout remorse.
Now officials from The Covenant School say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.
Samantha Peloza grabs a rebound in practice a week after their 100-0 win.
"It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said in a statement, adding the forfeit was requested because "a victory without honor is a great loss."
The private Christian school defeated Dallas Academy last week. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.
A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.
"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."
Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.
Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.
There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.
"On a personal note, I told the coach of the losing team how much I admire their girls for continuing to compete against all odds," Burleson said. "They showed much more character than the coach that allowed that score to get out of hand. It's up to the coach to control the outcome."
In the statement on the Covenant Web site, Queal said the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."
Covenant coach Micah Grimes did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press on Thursday.
Queal said school officials met with Dallas Academy officials to apologize and praised "each member of the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team for their strength, composure and fortitude in a game in which they clearly emerged the winner."
Civello said he appreciated the gesture and has accepted the apology "with no ill feelings."
At a shootaround Thursday, several Dallas Academy players said they were frustrated during the game but felt it was a learning opportunity. They also said they are excited about some of the attention they are receiving from the loss, including an invitation from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to see an NBA game from his suite.
"Even if you are losing, you might as well keep playing," said Shelby Hyatt, a freshman on the team. "Keep trying, and it's going to be OK."
Peloza said the coach and other parents praised the Dallas Academy girls afterward for limiting Covenant to 12 points in the fourth quarter. She added that neither her daughter nor her teammates seemed to dwell on the loss.
"Somewhere during that game they got caught up in the moment," Peloza said of the Covenant players, fans and coaches. "Our girls just moved on. That's the happy part of the story."

^^ yeah i heard that on espn. because he wouldn't apologize and called out the AD or something for apologizing to the other school.
its pretty crazy though, last year in high school we beat a team 14-0 in soccer (which is pretty bad) but i only played like 30 minutes (i've never sat out in the 3 years i lived there lol) and the jv kids scored like 5 goals, but the other team was really pissed and a few of their fans were yelling at our coach for it.

Back in middle school, we crushed a team 96 to 7.

No offense ... but if you're up by 20, let alone more, and still running the full court press .... you're an asshole of a coach.

firing him is way too extreme. You play the game to win or lose no matter how bad that can be.

He got fired because he refused to apologize, he didn't stick to the party line. Thats why they fired him.

I mean what did they expect? They have a fvcking mental disability, the person who allowed this game should be fired, not the coach.
The coach was simply trying to *TEACH* the learning disabled team a *LESSON* by beating them sensless so they *LEARNED* not to play able minded girls again in the future.
No wonder they didn't learn the lesson, they're basically retarded and the coach got fired for trying to teach them a lesson!!! LMAO!!!!! Someones gotta teach the girls right?
Maybe thats why they're disabled in the first palce? Everyone who tries to teach them something gets fired.
BUT I still bet for one brief moment, after the game was over, and the "disabled" girls were standing there, their IQ's prob all collectively jumped a point when they realized they had just got their asses handed to them.
Lesson taught!

^^^They weren't mentally disabled, they have learning disability or more PC "learning differences". I have a learning disability as well and they can range from simple dyslexia to visual processing disorders (thats what I have, makes it difficult to read graphs, charts and perform certain geometrical mathematical functions).
Most learning disabled children prove to have IQs much higher than the general public. So it wasn't like they were playing a team of retards (I know that's not PC but oh well).

Just wait, they're going to start fines for first round knockouts in the UFC.

i may sound like a dick head, but if and entire team can't score one swish during the whole game... then maybe they should've played someone at their own skill level, and not a team that they couldn't even compete against.... 4 seasons with out a win??? This type of thing is bound to happen.

This whole story is a joke.
Bad sportsmanship, yes.
But firing the guy....c'mon

Kids need to learn the harsh reality they will be beat in life. Maybe it will make them tougher and have more drive to win. I dont understand people talking about sportsmanship and mercy because for alot of athletes scoring tons of points can get them a scholarship and I think its unfair to expect people to pull up when there could be scouts watching them.

I one time went 100-0 with girls. I asked 100 girls out and none of them would go out with me....

there is still no reason to be shooting three pointers because the school that didnt score obviously has mentally challenged girls.

Haha, looks like I'm the sole dissenter in this thread. I agree with you that in the previous generation there was no worry about such things, but that doesn't mean that all was a-ok. It just means things went undiagnosed or under-diagnosed. I don't doubt for a minute that the stuff that happens to these kids in grade school sticks with them for a long time. I had it pretty bad in grade school, but nothing compared to some of the kids. Thinking back on it, I can't believe how cruel kids can be. Not saying that the kids in this scenario were cruel, but I'm just saying that I don't disagree with anyone who tries to cushion blows for other kids. They say that if you do that, the kids will never be ready for "real life". I just have to say that "real life" is much better and different than the bubble that is grade/high school.
