they are a franchise - super cheap 50 down $10/month no contract (was only $20 down when the first open) - they push themselves as a "for the masses" gym. There prices are so cheap that for a 13 thousand square foot gym they need 15,000 members just to break even - dumbells only go to 80- lbs ....you get the drift ..ive sen/been in one ....the go near the big franchises (la fitness , 24 hr fitness, etc) and then skim the big gyms members based solely on price point - they need to stay "mainstream" or they would never get the # of members needed to stay in business. I predict they have a life cyle of 5-8 years ...all gym like that (curves etc ...have a lifespan) The model will never stand the test of time in the fitness business imo. Plus they have limited servcies - think about it - the guy who joins a gym for $10/month isnt gonna shell out $ for a personal trainer - point being their sole revenue is based on volume of members - very bad in the fitness industry for long term success.... My $.02..

I actually belonged to Planet Fitness when they opend one up in my hometown about five years ago. The only good thing was it was open 24 hours so I could go whenever I wanted and do cardio. Aside from that it was the worst.

The manager looked like a troll...
It still might be worth $10 per month to do cardio and pick up some sluts.

Pretty funny because I have a few friends that go to a Planet Fitness in my area, and I have seen the "LUNK" alarm go off lol

I did a roof for one here in Michigan and had a long talk with the owner. He said I would not like working out in his gym. They have free tootsie rolls for after your workout and even a pizza night once a month. Dumbells only go to 60lbs.
The guy used to own a Powerhouse. He said his membership went up 400% after he bought the Planet Fitness franchise. All about the money.

yeah, I go to planet fitness. Have been for about 6 months now.
It's cheap, I pay 20 bucks a month.
It's the closest gym to me...I could walk there from my house, and it's open 24/7
20 bucks a month means I can use all the locations, and there is one where my brother lives, so we go there sometimes. I can bring guests whenever I want. I get unlimited tanning too. The 10 dollar membership just gets you unlimited use of 1 planet fitness location, no guests and no tanning. My brother bought a 2 year membership for 180 bucks when they were running a special around christmas.
It has it's down sides I'll admit...no deadlifting, not a problem for me cause I have a low back problem that prevents me from doing so anyway.
Dumbells only go up to 75's, so you may have to change your routine a little and omit certain exercises.
A big one for me is no squat cage. They have 4 smith machines but no cage. They have the rack, the one that's tapered at a 45 degree angle. I'd much rather have the cage in case of a forward or backward fall. I'm tall so the safty bars are too low with this type of set-up, I've got a long way to drop the weight.
I got repremanded on Sunday for changing the weights together on butterfly's.
One of my boyz got lunked 3 times in a row and was kicked out. I lift pretty quiet, and it makes you feel like a super-star being the strongest one there. Hot chicks frequent the planet fitness.

I don't have a problem with it. Just like the rules at the McDonalds play tubes that say no kids over 12 allowed. When my kids were 2 and 3 and the big 14 yr olds are running through there like a house on fire, the little ones are too intimidated to play.
Same goes for a gym... Lots of guys and gals are too intimidated to workout near someone who is squatting 500+ and grunting... they won't even use that section of the gym... Shouldn't the little ones have someplace they can go and feel safe playing with their little weights?
ps.. I can't work out there, I make too much noise.Last edited by jakk9011; 02-18-2009 at 11:04 AM. Reason: spelling

Wikipedia says these are its official rules
:
The restriction of dumbbell weights to a maximum of 80 pounds
The banning of chalk, often used for heavy lifts such as deadlifts.
The banning of grunting, swearing and psyching-up rituals.
The banning of excessive noise from bar drops etc. e.g. Olympic lifts.
An alarm (referred to as the "lunk alarm") is set off when individuals drop weights or "grunt" when lifting.
No cell phone use on the gym floor.
No jeans, bandannas, do rags or skullcaps.
Must wipe down equipment after each use.
