    Anyone ever try stand up?

A friend convinced me to do 5 minutes at a comedy showcase in less than 2 weeks.
I've never done it in my life, but figured what the hell...
I actually know a couple guys at my gym who do stand up too.
Anyone on here ever give it a try?

If I thought I could get up in front of a big croud and tell jokes without sweating blood i might. Fair play to you for doing it.

I've tried the standing 69, didn't work out so well.

But as for comedy, I don't think I'd be good at it. I usually have all my friends laughing but I need to act off other people, respond ridiculously etc. and can't imagine just standing up there and telling jokes.

Film it and post it haha

I don't know, as soon as I told my friend who does comedy that I hate people and anytime I'm on stage playing music I just hate the ****in audience he was convinced that I should do it.
I figure as long as I don't care what anyone thinks I'll be fine.
Worst case scenario I bomb horribly and am scarred for life. I can live with that.

It will be awesome wether you rule or blow. But keep in mind there's a very big difference between being funny around people and being funny in front of a crowd.

    I play guitar.
And I'm actually NOT very funny around people to begin with, so no one that knows me will be expecting too much anyway.
I just want to prove to myself that I can work up the balls to do it.

Just pick a favorite subject to rant about, work up a 5 minute schhtick (that's about 700 words), toss in some plaigerized stuff, practice your delivery in front of a mirror 30 to 40 times, and you'll do fine.

Women drivers -- Did you know that in Saudi Arabia, it's illegal for women to drive cars, but as of last January, they are allowed to operate riding lawnmowers?

Relationships -- Did you know that 50-50 is more often than not 60-40 and frequently 70-30?

The best humor doesn't come at someone else's expense, and doesn't need need vulgar language.
    --

And if you don't think you're funny, keep in mind the great comedian Jack Benny who didn't think he was particularly funny either. He did, however, have a knack for letting other people be funny around him, and was quite successful on early radio and TV.

Yeah I'm gonna skip the vulgar stuff. Although I do have one joke about naming queefs that I can't leave out.
Most of the comedians at these showcases think just because a joke ends with "baby rape" or something that it's funny. It's not. None of that shit is shocking anymore, it just makes you sound stupid.
Unless you're Doug Stanhope. That ****er manages to say some truly shocking shit still.

I'm actually really excited about this. I can't videotape it, cause I'll bomb if I know I'm going to see it later... my own worst critic kind of thing. But I'll let you guys know how it goes!

Man I must say it went really really well.
I got a ton of laughs, and didn't **** up or stutter at all.
The guy running sound told me I was the funniest one all night, and my friend Bob who's never said a nice word to me in ten years of knowing him said he was blow away by how awesome it was.

And it was much much more fun than playing in a band on stage too.

I'm reworking a couple things and am gonna keep writing stuff because they asked me back for the next comedy night next month.

    Pretty psyched.
I recommended giving it a try if you've ever considered it.
Very rewarding when it goes well!
