Your hands were tied in the situation, there is nothing you could do.
Some times bad things happen, even if everyone does what they are suppose to do.
It was not your fault, and your dog did what he was suppose to do (protect).
The kid, did what kids do, make mistakes.
It's hard to think for a lot of us, that the right thing to do is put the dog down. I'm not a hunter, and have never killed much larger things than a frog. But I know a lot of people would rather put a dog down in loving hands, than in a clinic around everyone he does not know.
It would be about impossible for me to look at my dog, and pull the trigger, I'd fall apart. Under all the thick skin and muscle, i'm a *****.
My dog is a Renacance bulldog, it's a off breed but a like a muscled up pit (imagine a over sized bulldog or ole english bulldog). He looks tuff but is a wimp too. If your dog was a lab, people would let it go, but because he's a pit and his appearance, they look at it different.
I know, when I leave town my girl friend is home alone. and I feel better knowing my dog is with her.

i was wondering if he could have been brought out of town/hidden/ran away too but they prolly would have fined him for that
