Just out of the hospital
Three weeks ago I went to the ER for bad stomach pain and bloating. My diagnosis was preforated diverticulitis. Ended up in the hospital for two weeks. The first week I was in IV antibiotics and couldn't eat or drink. Started to fell better but CAT scans showed that things weren't improving and that my kidney's and liver were starting to be effected by the infection so the doc's decided to operate.
They ended up removing 15% of my colon and giving me a colostomy bag. When i went into the hospital my weight was 225 pounds and when I left I was only 188 pounds. I lost a lot of my muscle mass. As if the colostomy bag wasn't depressing enough I had lost a good amount of my hard earned muscle size.
I can have the reversal surgery in three months which will put me back together again and get rid of the colostomy bag so I'm grateful for that. I pretty active at the gym 5 or 6 days a week so its going to be tough but I'm taking it one day at a time till I get thru this and am able to hit the gym hard again. To all out there MAKE SURE TO GET PLENTY OF FIBER IN YOUR DIET TO HELP PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING TO YOU.

Thanks for all your support. Diverticula are small pouches in your colon that bulge outward. These can collect bacteria that cause an infection. The theory is that a low fiber diet is the main cause. Diverticular is common in developed or industrialized countries-particularly the United States, England, and Australia-where low fiber diets are common. People from Asia and Africa, where they eat high-fiber vegetable diets rarely have this problem.
So time to increase the fiber in my diet. It's an easy solution to help prevent a lot of pain.
Thanks Midknight already eating yogurt daily.
So everybody please make sure your are getting plenty of fiber in your diet, I wouldn't wish this on anybody.

Thanks for the heads up and sorry for your misfortunes.Did your doc suggest any particular food/supp to get most your fiber?

Doc's suggested getting more fiber by eating fresh fruit and vegetables. Eating whole grain breads, such as 100% whole wheat, rye or bran. To chose cereals made from whole grains, such as wheat, brans, or oats. Have brown rice instead of white rice or potatoes. You should have about 25 to 35 grams of fiber each day. Also drink plenty of fluids.

Good luck man. And do not worry about the lost muscle mass. Just concentrate on getting healthy again. Use this time to tweak your diet. Also, plan a new- revised workout routine. With your muscle memory, and new diet/workout routine, you can probally get back to where you were in no time. Just look at it as a fresh start. To begin with more knowledge than you had before. I have always dreaded the colostomy bag (family history of colon cancer), so I will add you to my prayers bro. Stay strong and keep your head up. At least you know that you can come out of this
