Imac or PC?
Which one would you say is better and why?

I have always dealt with Pc however I have also used Mac's and I find the main difference between Macs and Pcs is pretty simple. Mac's are more of a multimedia operating system and a Pc is more of a get down and get to work computer. However I am not saying that both cannot be used in different ways. There is also a price difference between the both(Pc cheaper then Mac)
PCs and Macs are still not 100% compatible, despite their now similar architectures. While many software vendors release their products for both platforms, not all do. Particularly, most of the popular computer games are PC-only.
In all honesty you are going to have to try both and see what is better for yourself and your personal use.

Get a Mac and never look back at a PC again. I have two mac and have never had a single problem with them ever. Cant say the same for my PC's.

-

Internet use, digital photo editing, storing photos, small amount of downloading.
Ive been looking at this months apple release Imac and it looks outstanding, the screen and picture is so sharp but I am worried about it only having 5% of the market and maybe problems what i dont know about, are they that different?

^^^.. Apple have wayyyy better multimedia than PC ever have, My friend is a Editor and animator and he only uses AppleMac, U will benefit more with your photography getting the Mac, PC is more basic plug and play and get to work rather than specialising in a field such has editing, photography etc. The only issue i have with Mac is that its not upgradable. And that sucks ....

Here where i work, all the Graphic Designers, Editors and Web designers all use IMac's, and specially for your photography, u cant go wrong. It a little more pricey i think, but its worth it for you. I dont know why anyone else would want to use the Mac desktops if they not into designing etc.... ?

^I would like to disagree with the above statement. There has been many users who use Pc for there multimedia needs. Hell a lot of top designers have been known to use Pc and Macs.
Internet use, digital photo editing, storing photos, small amount of downloading are his main uses and with this being said I would recommend a PC instead of a Mac just for the fact that he will be doing a little bit of everything.

The new Imacs screens are excellent. If your going to do any kind of internet surfing then a Mac is the way to go. No viruses, no worms, no Trojan Horses. Just worry free internet surfing. I went to a Mac in grad school because every month or so I would get a virus on my PC and loss information for school. Switched to a Mac and never had to worry about losing a paper or data from a study and suck.

I have never had a virus on my computer for years and it is a Pc...I don't even run an antivirus just for the simpe fact that I know enough about them since dealing with them everyday for my career.
I currently have had a few monitors in my life. The one I have right now is a Acer 23inch monitor which has been good to me for the past 2 years. I have also heard that Samsung monitors are top notch as well. If you do go for pc get a 23 inch monitor....just for the fact it is the sweet spot in monitor buying right now.

Apple have released a program called "Boot Camp" which allows you install Microsoft Windows on an Apple computer, it also contains all the drivers needed for to use your Apple hardware perfectly in Microsoft Windows. So you can look at your choices:
1: Get a PC, you can only run Microsoft Windows on it.
2: Get an Apple, you can run MacOS or Microsoft Windows on it.
But I don't use either of those operating systems, I use Linux. And you can run Linux on both PC's and Apples.
Apple computers are quite a bit more expensive than normal PC computers of similar performance. If you pay the same price for a PC as you do for a Mac, the PC will be more powerful.
The only reason I'd recommend that someone should buy an Apple is if they want to use MacOS. Otherwise just spend less money on a PC, or spend the same amount of money and get a more powerful PC!

You cheeky fuk pig
I must admit I know nothing about computers but I have been learning, I went and test driven the new imac last weekend and ive never seen anything like it, even PC what they had didnt even come close, it was truely outstanding but I am a novice and I dont know what I am looking for when its about computers.
I am worried about putting apps on the mac, ive read they dont take them well??
Can i use my wireless router on the mac?
Could i install my AOL on the Mac?
What really is pushing me towards the mac is the quality of the screen, now your going to have to stay with me here because I dont know what I am talking about BUT, ive heard apple use something called e-ips screens and PC use TN panels and thats what gives the difference in quality>>> is this true? because ive found that Dell have a e-ips monitor now and its says its ultrasharp, Not sure if I am right with that but ive been doing a bot of digging because the quality of the monitor is probably more important to me when I am editing photos.
Or am I never going to reproduce what apple have in regards to their screen image?
At the moment I am 50/50

Can i use my wireless router on the mac? YES, it is a bit different but can be done
Could i install my AOL on the Mac? A lot of people are having problems with AOL and Macs...I am sure there is a fix out there but nowhere near your abilities to do.

There are some applications which will only run under the "MacOS" operating system. There are also some applications that will only run under the "Microsoft Windows" operating system.
You can put both of these operating systems on an Apple, so you won't have any problem with getting software to work.

You're looking for a desktop computer, right? (As opposed to a laptop)

Marcus last question, How comfy are u using the PC u are currenlty using? do u find it user friendly to use? Why do u wanna upgrade?
-
11-04-2009, 05:31 AM #20
Mine is just a basic PC, but with this new software I am wanting to install for my photo editing requirements I dont have enough memory, I could install more memory but my computer is around 6yrs old and the monitor is rubbish, so I know its only a matter of time before the system starts failing, so i thought I would buy a new system, loads of memory and a better quality built one along side lastest monitor which I believe is e-ips ones!! full HD 1080 or higher!
It is more or less on all day, but I dont do much just the basic stuff like ive mentioned.

U also cant go wrong with the PC, u can still get great applications for your photography etc, it all depends how comfy u are with you PC, Coz getting to know the Mac and the applications might just be a schlep for you, coz u already know your ways around the PC. But if u really want to go and specialise in your photography and are up to learn a whole new Operating System then go with the Mac. Its a catch 22 situation i think. U can maybe spend a little more on getting a nice screen card, and a 22" Full HD LED Monitor and ull be good to go. U cant go wrong either way.

What are Dell computers like?
-
11-04-2009, 10:24 AM #27
Dells are annoying! If a part breaks on them you have to buy it directly from Dell itself instead of getting a replacement part at any computer store!

As a computer technician and a user of every version of Windows since 95, Linux and OS X , I can say get the Mac and the only thing you will be sorry about is not getting one sooner. You can still have Windows if you need it because you can install Windows on the Mac as well and for the few times you may need it you can just boot Windows.
FACT: About 95% of the broken computers that come into my shop are Dell or HP.
FACT: In 10 years of being a full time Tech I have yet to see an infected Mac.
FACT: You can upgrade Macs, and its not hard to do.
Any questions , just ask.
Apple's are more expensive. You get less "bang for your buck" when buying an Apple.
Macs are not always more expensive and you do get what you pay for. In the long run you get more bang for your buck do to not having to run antivirus software, or maintain it. Macs also hold their resell value much better.Last edited by gunslinger2; 11-04-2009 at 11:44 PM.

You have to take into account the market share that PC's have, because it's much greater than the share Mac's have. Still though, even if there were an equal amount of Mac's and PC's on the planet, maybe about 80% of the computers that come through your door would be PC's.

Thankfully though I use Linux, which can run on either a Mac or a PC, so I'd rather spend the same amount of money on a PC and get a more powerful machine.

Just to be specific, you haven't seen an infected Mac running MacOS. If you stick Microsoft Windows on a Mac then it's just as vulnerable to viruses as a normal PC.
If there were only two operating systems to choose from, MacOS or MS-Windows, then I'd have to go with MacOS, and therefore I'd have to buy an Apple Mac.

Linux is good also. As for the more powerful system OS X can do with far less resources what Windows can. The new core i7 quad core Macs with 16 gigs of RAM aint nothin to sneeze at in terms of power.

Still underdecided guys,
What I have seen when ive been doing my research on both computers is, its always the PC guys asking is it worth swapping to a Imac, its never Imac guys asking to swap to a PC!! makes you think the Imac guys wouldnt even consider it.

It really boils down to what you like, what you are going to use it for and what you are willing to pay for it. such is life.
I purchashed a 24" iMac for my wife, she is getting her masters and is in front of the screen for 4 to 6 hours a night.
She is able to have 2 documents open side by side and still have room on the screen. Eye strain is not an issue, screen is absolutely beautiful.
For photo editing , graphics, I dont believe you can beat an apple.
mac is more $$
Security wise, Only because the PC is more popular, there are more vulnerabilities ( Virus's etc ).
There is alot of malicious code out there for MACs, run a good anti-virus and all should be good, PC or MAC. As soon as the MAC becomes as popular as the PC, you will see just as many virus's for MAC as you do for the PC.
I have been Security ( Information Assurance) director for @10 years now.
23 years in the computer game.
cons,
I use office ( word etc) at work and I tend to have issues running my documents on the mac, I use office for mac and the document will hang on a regular basis.
I have a iMac desktop , love it
Mac pro laptop , wife loves it!
I also have various PCs at home.
I like the Dell products, they last. (yes I read the post above)
But, If I had to buy 1 desktop and only have 1 desktop.
For me.
I would buy a PC.
A Dell.
I like microsoft. I use office at work and office at home

If you need Windows you can run windows on a Mac. Its called bootcamp and it allows you to boot into either OS X or Windows. You will have the best of both worlds in the Mac. You can not do this with a PC.
