The "sleeper hold", more correctly known as the carotid hold, does not involve the airway at all. "cutting of the airway" is a very dangerous act that can collapse the wind pipe and get your ass on murder charges. This is NEVER practiced in sport or self defense. The carotid involves putting the person in what who may have seen on ufc as a choke and leaving a spot for the wind pipe by the throat and using the forwarm and bicep to put pressure on each carotid vein in the neck. This will reduce blood flow to the brain and cause him to lose consciousness for up to ten seconds allowing you to gain control. if you keep applying pressure after they pass out brain damage or death can occur.

The only other move involving the neck is the much dirtier but equally effective tiger claw. You simply grab the persons throat with one hand and dig your fingers behid, again careful not to squeeze. this will startle the shit out of them an almost always gives you an upper hand
