Anyone wear a hearing aid?
Ive worked for decades in noisy environments using various equipment and power tools. I didn't think too much about it when I was in my 20's but now I wish I did. A little hearing protection would have went a long ways.
Half of the time I can't make out what someone is saying to me. Ive learned to look at them to pick up as much as I can with they're lips. Not too bad once they know they're dealing with someone who can't hear that well. It's even worse in an environment like the gym with lots of background noise. I can't tell you how many times someone has said something that I didn't understand and I nod like I picked up on it. Then they look at me like Im an idiot. Shouldn't have nodded. It just gets old saying; what, huh, sorry, did you say something?
Im nearing 50 yrs old. When I was a kid having a hearing aid was kinda like a handicap. Or a sign you had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. I guess I gotta get over that stigma.
Any suggestions on hearing aids or anything else appreciated?
Because of the stigma of a hearing aid I was thinking of getting a state of the art "hearing horn" like they used in the old days.

I don't think it's a huge deal, but I understand your hesitation.
If nothing else, do it for the people around you. We finally convinced my dad to get one (he's 58), and he was doing the same thing you described doing. It was annoying as hell, when I'd say something and he would just nod and smile:
"Hey dad, I don't know what to do, I just got my girlfriend pregnant"
**Dad just nods and smiles***
Moral of the story, we got him one, he's happier, and so is everyone else who talks to him. Also, the newer models they have now (especially the CIC ones) are practically invisible when worn.

hey cgb, i gotta agree with D7 on this one. fck what everyone else thinks, its your quality of life you should be concerned with.
makes me happy my parents always made me race with ear plugs in. hated it when i was a kid, but now i cant race without em. kinda strange now that i think about it.

Wait so you should get hearing aids for the people around you not for yourself... hmmm kinda *** backwards if you ask me oh and whats this about its annoying... poor you... you had to repeat yourself... horrible...
Are you the kind of guy that walks up to a guy in a wheelchair and tells him its annoying that he's in a wheelchair or to a handicapped man who walks with a cain and say **** you for taking up all the up front parking and good for him not turning over and getting a wheelchair btw... like the rest of the lazy ***es
Hearing loss is a handicap it may not keep you from running a race or whatever but idk how many times I've watched my mother leave the room while everyone was talking and having a good time... then I followed her once and found her in a bedroom crying... she felt horrible at all that she was missing out on in the conversation and how everyone would dismiss her because they would ask her something and she wouldn't hear them and she would ask what they said and instead of repeating it they would just smirk or something and go on about the conversation leaving her to wonder what the hell they said. I pooled the family together to get her some hearing aids after that immediately not for me or for them but for my mom... It's F-ing horrible!

I would look into it. they make them ultra tiny now, not like the big things behind the ear years ago.

That's awesome! I bet you could hear an ant fart with that!
Gotta be a bodybuilder to carry it around though.
Reminds me of a true story. This guy is giving a speach and having problems with his stomach. During the speach it lets several silent (sbd) farts slip by just to alleviate the stomach pain. Makes an appointment with his Dr to discuss he current stomach ailment. During his DR's examination he explains in detail the problems he's been having and then adds, "Ive even let several silent gas emissions out during our talk, just can't help it". The Dr says "Ok, we need to look into your stomach distress, but first, lets get your hearing checked"...Last edited by Bossman; 01-16-2010 at 10:43 AM.

01-16-2010, 01:35 PM #14I feel sorry for your mom. How old is she? Attractive? They say, once you go deaf, you never go back...
One thing I can tell you about my mom (and I really wish I couldn't) is that she wears thongs... I only know this cause she hangs them to dry in her bathroom... and good help me I had to pee... hahaha
On a personal note my dad died this past Christmas Eve at 86 years old from Colon Cancer... he lived a long and great life and I am very proud to have had him as a father!
Thanks

In recent years, people who don't need glasses are wearing glasses for the sake of fashion. So the next step is that people without hearing difficulties will start wearing fake hearing aids.
