Moving to Europe
So, as soon as I am out of the Army, and I no longer have to live in the US, I am going to move over seas.
I always wanted to move to England, but it seems a lot of my English friends disagree with this idea. They say it is going down hill there.
So then I figured France. I mean, from everything I have heard and read, it is one of the greatest places to live.
Of course, I have always been interested in German culture, and speak some German, so I figured maybe Germany or Austria is the place for me.
I considered Canada, but it's too close, too boring, and it's too cold too often.
If it was up to my wife, we would live in Japan. Which I wouldn't mind visiting, but I don't know, I get the feeling that any Asian country would be more fun to visit than live in.
Experience is the best tool, though. So, early 2011 (no date set, just an ASAP sort of thing) when me and the wife get out tax money, we are setting out to Europe. We have no official plans yet, but I think what we may do it land in an undecided country, then take the trains all over Europe, and spend a little time in each country, seeing what we think of it.
Any experienced suggestions on where to start? What route to take? Where to end up? Or what to do in these places to really get the most out of our time there?
Thanks!

Well it depends on what your looking for and why you have decided to move? Business, or change of environment? I live in Europe currently (Bosnia to be exact) and I can tell you much about Germany, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and Bosnia. I have lived in all of those states from 1 year in Austria, Slovenia and Croatia to 3 years in Germany and 2 in Bosnia (The rest of the years being in NYC).
Japan is nice but like you said, but i wouldn't live there.

I am moving mainly for change of environment, and to get away from all the "American-ness"

Never thought about that corner of the world, but now that you bring it up, I have met a couple of Aussies, and they had nothing but good things to say.

Australia is a good place to live. Plenty of opportunities and low crime (in relation to what i have seen about the US).
Google "Brisbane or Gold Coast Australia" and see what you come up with"

If it was me, I'd be looking at Sweden, Denmark, or Italy.

If that's the case, stay away from Australia. The whole country practically stopped when Oprah came over.
If you want something different, then hit Southern Europe, where people actually aren't glowed to their televisions. People are a lot more social in Southern Europe as well.Last edited by danielmaco; 12-27-2010 at 10:33 AM.

England is becoming a multicultural hell-hole. France has increasing problems with
muslims. Suggest Germany, Austria.

Budapest man, so cheap and real pretty.
Cost of living will change fast if they join the EU....
Travel in europe is cheap, so I would set myslef up somewhere central and cheap and travel mnay places so I see where is best suited for me to live.
BTW...Japan rocks anywhere else I have been

That all sounds real nice. But what are you going to do for a job/income? Have you thought about citzenship yet? It would be cool if you had a job waiting for you.
When I lived in Germany, I almost stayed. Opah was a manager in the shoe factory before he retired. He said I could get a job there, and I could have the third floor of his house until I get my own place. It would have been real easy.

Yeah well if this dude is going to look at which country has immigrants, multi-culture, and Muslims then he should move to an isolated island. Every country has some minorities/immigrants because of workers, multi-culture because of immigrants, and Muslims because around 20% of the world is Muslim. This whole media propaganda ****ing with European peoples minds has got to stop.

I dont know if I love of hate this place (England)...
If your thinking in terms of the economy, property, NHS, migrants, weather I'd say, yeah, this place is f*cked. Its got worse in my lifetime, not better.
One of the best places I have been was Thailand.
I will be travelling a fair bit next year (work), so I will know more then.
