Walmart...
You have to read this and think about it the next time you are in Wal-Mart
Number 18 is especially nasty.
This should boggle your mind!! And Probably scare you as well!
1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.
2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!
3.. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.
4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.
5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer, and most can't speak English.
6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world.
7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.
8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy.
9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.
10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers ; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.
11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur At a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion.)
12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.
13. The value of product for Wal-Mart passing through the port of San Diego each year is a larger sum than 93% of ALL countries Gross National Product (GNP) ......and that is only ONE port ...one way thats how Wal-Mart gets it's stuff.
14. Of the 1.6 million employees, only 1.2% make a living above the poverty level.
15. Wal-Mart's head office is located and centralized in Bentonville. Due to this fact, there are more millionaires per square mile there
than any place on Earth.
16. The official U.S. Government position is that Wal-Mart's prices are no lower than anyone else's when compared to a typical families weekly purchases. That's the view of the statisticians at the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (BLS) responsible for calculating the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
17. 92% of everything Wal-Mart sells, comes from China . Another 4% comes from Chinese owned companies in the U.S. or in 3rd world Countries.
18. Wal-Mart and MOST large companies, take out life insurance on it's employees, without their knowing. If an employee dies, ALL the insurance moneys go to the companies. I.e. An employee making $18,000 per year, dies, and the company might make as much as $1 million. Most often these moneys, coming from what is commonly referred to as "Dead Peasant Life Insurance Policies", is paid out to executives as bonuses. (A common practice, unknown by the average consumer).
19. Wal-Mart now averages a "profit" (not sales) of $36 billion per year.

that number 18 is crazy, I have seen the stories on that. Very sad the families don't get jack, and the company makes more money off of you when you die.

Whats the problem? This is capitalism in action.
How do you guys expect Wal-Mart to buy "51% of its products from US companies," we don't produce anything anymore.
Anyone can take out a life insurance policy on anyone else that they choose, if they are the ones paying the premiums on it, then why should anyone else be entitled to the policy when it pays out? If you want life insurance on a loved one, then take out a policy and pay the premiums.
What most people fail to realise (since most people haven't the faintest clue of laissez-faire economics, free trade, capitalism, etc), is that when Wal-Mart strong arms a manufacture into lowering its price, it is able to pass on that savings to the consumer while still making a profit. Wal-Mart's business model is ingenious, because they have figured out a way to make an enormous profit, by selling a large volume of things for a very small profit margin on each item. They move volume, but in doing so, they are ultimately providing the best price for the consumer. When business's are forced to compete, do you know who wins? YOU WIN, the consumer wins. Business competes, and this leads them to offering the lowest possible price that they can afford to, while still staying in business and making a profit.
Would you goto work everyday if you didn't make money, or if you made just enough money to pay your bills, put gas in your car, and put food on the table, with absolutely no money left over for leisure activities. Well such is the case with ANY corporation, they are not in business just to break even, they are in business to make a PROFIT, that means money left over AFTER all the bills are paid.
The ability for any person, or any corporation in this country to make a LIMITLESS profit is what drives INVENTION, INNOVATION, and ADVANCEMENT. You need look no further then the immense technological advances that FREE MARKET SOCETIES have made over those where central government planners control every minutiea of detial of the economy, business, and technology.
The proof is in the pudding guys. We didn't win the Cold War with a single shot fired. Capitalism won the Cold War, it defeated an inferior system of government based on feel good idealistic bullshit. You guys are very quick to jump on corporations for making what you view as "obscene profits," but yet fail to realise that you are only pointing to these companies because they are at the top of the food chain. There are some of you on here who make 6 figure salaries, and even some who make $60,000-$80,000 per year. To a person who is on food stamps and might be maintaining a household on $16,000-$18,000 a year, they may view you the exact same way that you are talking about a company like Wal-Mart and their executives who are making a substantial sum of money.
Everything must be put into perspective.

kroger is a small grocery store. nothing serious.
it may be true because there are more walmarts but if you take the same number of walmarts that there are of wegmans, wegmans would blow them out of the water in food sales. wegmans is a grocery store the size of an average walmart itself.

The documentary is even crazier ! They will build stores just outside city limits, or close stores and move them to avoid taxes. They will leave stores abandoned all over the country. make their employees get gov assited health care. It goes on and on. Maybe someone can find it. It will make you think twice about shopping there for sure.

Are you saying capitalism is a perfect system?
Just because it can be done doesn't mean it's moral/ethical/a good practice. You really don't think there is anything wrong with hoping your employees die? When you're cashing in a $1mil policy on an employee you pay $15,000 a year, that's exactly what you're doing..... hoping they die.
Ingenious indeed. I don't have any problems with their business model.
I'm not jumping on WalMart for making extreme profits. I'm jumping on them for the way they treat their employees and for what they do with their profits.

number 18 i dont see how that could be true any adult over the age of 18 has to give consent before a life insurance policy can be carried out in his or her name
under the age of 18 they have to ask the parents consent

I'm a pretty liberal guy, but I agree with Godfather. We asked for capitalism and this is what we got. Its not a perfect system, but its the system that we've chosen. I would agree with buying 51% of the products from US companies or stuff made here, but not if its going to raise prices. Don't like walmart, don't shop there. But if you've got a large family, or two big ass sons who eat a ton (as well as me being a 300lb gorilla), you can't beat walmart prices. So unless you guys who hate walmart are going to pay for my $2000+/mo food bill, give me a better option.

Nothing is made here anymore beacuse.People think they have the right to sit on their ass on get behind. So they can come in on over time to do wat they shouldve had done already.I know this for a fact.I worked at a GE plant in Louisianna.Fresh out of the Marines.I never seen so many people walking around(which is not suppose to happen) Talking not working. Now this was the 1st shift. And they would tell u that if there was a layoff they would wave good bye to you.Now on 2nd shift there aint half the people but do twice the work. This is another reason companys dont stay in the USA.People here are lazy. They think the company owes them something. Those days are gone!!!

I don't give Walmart any of my money.
As a consumer, you may get immediate gratification in the form of savings for that particular shopping trip, but the cost is long term selling out on the best interest of society. Walmart has forced small, independently owned local businesses to close, with held health care from its employees when they could afford to provide it, and have made other despicable business decisions to make a profit. They don't give a shit about people- only profit.
If more consumers were educated about Wal-mart's business practices, I don't think they'd support the business.

You have the right to vote with your dollars. Don't like something that a company does? Don't give them your money. That is the best part about capitalistic/democratic societies, and more particularly in a system such as ours, a Republic of states. You dont like a company and their business practices? Vote with your dollars. You dont like the high property taxes, arcane laws, or other practices of a particular state in the US? There are 49 other ones, vote with your feet! You dont like a particular leader of said state or the entire country? Vote every 2,4, or 6 years (Congressman, President, Senate).
The entire system is about CHOICE. We live in a society which is driven by that simple word. Choice determines everything, choice means personal accountability for ones self. I don't really want to get partisan, but Conservative/Tea Party/Libertarian Republicans like myself, believe that freedom of choice, less laws and not more, less government and not more, is the answer to many of the problems plaguing our country today.
Democracy and capitalism often go hand in hand. I do not agree that Democracy/Capitalism are perfect, in fact FAR FROM IT. I have a plethora of problems with the system that I could write a dissertation on (and in fact have written a thesis on one problem with our system of governance). My personal feelings can be summed up perfectly by Winston Churchill, former PM of the United Kingdom.
"Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." (from a House of Commons speech on Nov. 11, 1947)
